Last fall I bought a 2006 GS430 from a non-Lexus dealer and within a couple of weeks the VSC, stability control and check engine light came on. After several attempts to get it fixed, the service guy at the dealership found a whitepaper on the subject that said a new gas cap will take care of the problem. After replacing the cap, the problem has never come back. Needless to say, I am very pleased.

First thing to do when the check engine light comes on is to read the diagnostic trouble codes with a scan tool. Replacing the gas cap would make sense if you found an evap emissions leak code that wasn't resolved simply by tightening the cap and clearing the code, but there are dozens of other codes that have nothing whatsoever to do with the gas cap.
