potential nav hack issue?
potential nav hack issue?
i've gotten the nav hack done by tommy at musicbox a while ago now, and i've just begun to notice something: when the head unit is in radio mode, the "MSG" function that displays a radio's station takes a while to load, even when the car is parked. is this an issue because the speed sensor is cut? even with the switch turned to the non moving position, the "MSG" function still takes a while to load. also, some radio stations doesn't even have a display. i tried disconnecting the battery to reset the head unit, but still not working. any ideas?

Are you sure there is anything wrong? Is it taking longer to load than it used to, or longer than it takes in other radios?
Remember that this isn't satellite radio, it's regular terrestrial analog radio. The call letters, song titles and other information are known as RDBS data, and are transmitted in a very low bandwidth digital stream hidden in a subcarrier. Though the technology that allowed this was approved by the FCC in 1993, widescale adoption didn't happen until a few years ago as radio stations implemented studio automation software. There are still a number of stations that either don't broadcast it, or broadcast only their program type and call letters. As for speed, data is transmitted at less than 1200 baud, with an effective speed after error correction that is slower still.

had the tommy hacks done a few months ago too, and noticed that the MSG takes a long time to load up or whatever, but only very recently. didn't really think it had anything to do with the hacks though. just chalked it up to radio stations not sending out the data...
i agree!! it's only been recently right? at first, there wasn't any issue.

me being the OCD person that i am, i tested it out and it's only a couple of stations, which leads me to believe it has nothing to do with the hacks. for ex, 98.7 works fine, but 102.7 won't load any data. final answer: CA radio stations suck.
