USB connector question

What does the USB connector on the newer ISxxx does besides charging? Can it be add to older ISxxx?

You can charge your iphone or ipod, play music files from a USB drive/stick, and play music from ipod/iphone. Unsure if you can add it to older IS models. The other drawback on the USB connector: once you have your ipod/iphone connected, you can't navigate songs from the device anymore, if has to be from A. the navigation screen or B. the regular display screen.
