Default Broken Vent Clips?

I had an installer come today to put sirius satellite radio in my '08 IS250, and he essentially gave up when he couldn't get the vent to come out above the navigation / radio unit. I think there's a chance that the clips are broken -- I've read the instructions that say when you pry them down at a 45 degree angle, they latch onto something and stay in the down position. It looks like the clips simply won't stay down, and 2 of them I don't even see anymore?? I think he might have snapped them off.

For anyone who has experience taking these things apart, do you think I'm completely out of luck getting this vent to come out? Is there anything else I could try doing?

Thanks for any help!
