Just came back from the dealer. I went to the service dept and I explained to the service rep what had happened and what i thought the problem was caused by. He told me that he doesnt believe what the towing guy said until he checks the car out himself with the tech. He told me he was going to give me a call as soon as he knows the problem which is by this afternoon.

Will keep you guys posted

Here are the pix.

Bummer! I am glad nobody on the road was hurt. I hope the dealership gets it right this time and fixes the problem.

However, unless you were doing a major service, that bolt/part of the suspension shouldn't have been touched.

At first I thought it was a tie-rod end that snapped or something of the sort. Yes, when you have only have control over one wheel at speed....bad things can happen. Very bad things.
Thats just very weird. I never had any suspension work done... the only thing that they should had done was probably check out my front brakes and pads.

What are the chances of it slipping out even though they never even took it off? Not even sure if this happened to anyone but this is damn well scary ever since i thought about what could have happened.

Btw there is still no answer. I called the tech and he said they are still looking into it... which its been nearly over 4 hrs since i dropped it off. =/

I took my car into Lexus of Glendale one time for service but after hearing about this I don't want to take my car their anymore. I have to find another dealer close to LA.
Sorry to hear about your problem but atleast you won free RIMS? What kind were they?

Glad to hear that this did NOT turn into a bigger catastrophe..

1) YES, please show us pics of the problem area...

2) Get a hold of the Service Director today and have a sit down with them..
Let him/her know you were there Friday and find out which Tech "inspected" or test drove your car.. Also, have them investigate why their Certified Trained Lexus Technician did NOT see or find the problem and why the tech was on his cell phone during your test drive...

I agree with "Lobuxracer", make sure a different Tech works on your car!!!
Your paperwork from Friday should have a Tech Name or Tech ID#

Good Luck & Keep us posted

the lexus tech should of caught the problem.

Broke off. If it had gone loose first, the hole in the ball joint mount would be oval and the contact plane fretted. It is neither, so in all likelihood the bolt sheared even with the upright. That would also explain the noise.

That's a bizarre failure of a pretty good sized bolt. Really rare to have one fail like that. The repair may be a bit involved depending on how easy it is to remove the broken piece from the upright. I'd say something went wrong at the factory and it was coincidence you'd just had the brakes examined. There is no reason to ever mess with that bolt unless you are replacing the ball joint.

Tell them what happened. Nothing more. They'll get it fixed. The repair is very straightforward, so there's really nothing to tell them except it happened while you were driving down the road with no warning. This is why you have a warranty, and this is also something Lexus will want to investigate in depth. They may want to replace all the pieces involved so they can do a root cause analysis, or they may just fix it and call it a day. But in either case, it's just next to impossible the previous tech did anything to cause this.

Let them fix your car. It's probably not the dealership's fault.

sorry to hear about your suspension-related issue. i hope you get it sorted out.

while i have not had any "really bad" experiences with lexus dealerships, i believe that when you do have one you should seek all possible avenues to "make up" for what you had to go through - including contacting corporate.

congrats on winning those rims. you know you have a choice between the chrome spiders or the gunmetal stock 18's, right? /OT

If anyone puts themselves in your place, they'd understand the tone of your initial post. I would be PISSED if this happened to my car, and I do think it's a little odd that this happened immediately after you pick your car up from a service visit.

It's also inappropriate that they had you call and pay for a cab. At the very least, someone from sales could have taken you home as a goodwill gesture.

Lexus fails on this one. I was similarly treated by a Dodge dealer years ago, was pissed, and got an apology and reimbursement for their poor treatment of the situation. Lexus knows better, period.

This is not a typical failure, and the dealer knows that this is the type of thing that could have ended up in injury/death, followed by major lawsuit. Make sure you hold on to the paperwork from this one, and be certain it is properly documented.
