Default Cracked Windshield...

This past weekend while in AZ a tiny little pebble **** my windshield and put a small chip in it. This small chip made it the entire straight drive back to Los Angeles almost without growing. The following morning after driving to work on twisty Sunset Blvd the tiny pit grew to a tiny pit and very long crack. So i am now at the point where my windshield has to be replaced. Realizing htat a stealership would be insainly expensive i chose to call just for a price check and was quoted about $1150 for the glass and $250 for labor. I then called a window repair company that i was referred to and was quoted $445 including labor if i pay cash. Supposedly the windhsield is identical to the OEM with the exception of the fact that it does not say Lexus in the bottom corner.

now to the point of my post...Assuming that the windshield is infact the same, is there anything i should look for when having it replaced?

Do you have rain sensing wipers?

If you do, that needs to be integrated with the new windshield, which may require the necessity to use the OEM glass...

I dont have the Lux or ML package so i dont believe so...not to mention that the wipers have never automatically started the few times the car has been exposed to rain.Leaving rain sensors out of the picture...i should be fine with the aftermarket glass, right?

Same Gov safety standards.
You'll be fine.
That's the I've went in the past and will in the future.
I don't believe the Lexus logo in the corner is worth so much more money.

but is thethickness of the glass the same? you might not want to get a cheap windshield knowing that the quality is far less than Lexus glass..

that might affect the cabin noise/wind noise maybe?

thanks, I will be checking this prior to installation. the guy is coming to me and said i can inspect the glass prior to install. i am going to be verifying the numbers in the bottom corner of the windshield to ensure that they match up.

The Lexus logo in the corner of my windshield is starting to rub off. Don't waste your money with the OEM windshield at the dealership. If you can find a reputable place who will do it for less $$$, go for it!

In the past, I've always used PPG glass when replacing my windshield since there's a national warranty.

Check with your insurance company first. Some, like mine, will replace a windshield for free, even if you have a deductible on your comprehensive coverage.

Thanks for the advice. i didnt think comp coverage covered windshields but my does too . My car is already at lexus for the 5k service and i told them to order the windshield yesturday when i dropped it off...not realizing that i would go aftermarket or that insurance would cover it...and after i made the claim with my insurance and called the service guy at Lex i ask if i could keep the loaner at no cost while waiting for the adjuster and he say "no prob." gotta love Lexus free loaner car for like 5 or 6 days including my free service and windshield repair. Leuxs service is 2nd to none!!!!!

The install is probably more important than the glass. Make sure they use the proper sealant/glue since the windshield helps to support the rigidity of the car's frame.
