I am going to get my oil change too...but probaly just buy the oil and filter myself and ask a mechanic to do it...can any1 guide me to which oil and which filter is best for the car??
I use conventional 5w20, simply because there has NEVER been any evidence that proves synthetic oil will make an engine last longer than conventional oil.
Oil analysis is used primarily in the aviation industry, where it's required. With mechanical engine failure so rare these days, oil analysis will only tell me what I already know. My engine is fine. However, it could be useful if you suspect or hear something unusual.

OEM filter and any full synthetic oil. Lexus recommends 5w-20 but 0w-20/0w-30/5w-30/10w-30 can be safely used. Lexus/Toyota engines are inherently gentle on oil.

Lexus / Toyota Oil Filter & 5w30 Mobile One 5K Oil for me...
Side Question:
So I put exactly 6.6 Qts in my 1st 5k, DIY oil change and I kinda feel it needs more..
Does the oil level really need to reach the top dot??? or is under OK ??

Anywhere between the lines/dots is safe. The two lines show or represent one quart to help you know how much you need, to top it off.Originally Posted by Joe Z

has anyone tried the Mobil1 Extended Performance oil? also, when everyone states that they change their filter every 5K, then oil every 10K, do you drain the oil and put it back in after you change the filter?

I could not agree more. I have always been told to follow the manufacturers oil change recommendation, even when using synthetic oil. That is why I plan to do the 5K changes until 72K miles when the powertrain warranty is up.Originally Posted by Koz
SSO is capable of the longest change interval, of any oil, on the market (35,000 miles or one year with the right filtration). It is also one of the most expensive oils on the market. Changing this oil at 5K is a sin.

My (2006) owners manual says 5K miles for oil changes. I cannot find anywhere where it states that 7.5K or even 10K is OK. I would go 7,500 miles on the SSO without any concern whatsoever, as long as I see that Toyota allows this interval. I am fully aware of the huge sump capacity (6.8quarts) giving lots of reserve for TBN and to dilute the wear metals, etc. But if something should happen to my engine, I do not want to give Toyota any reason to deny repairs. My last car literally blew up after the turbo blades hit the housing and shattered into thousands of pieces and was inhaled by the engine. The engine was replaced under warranty and I had to provide proof that the oil was changed per the maintenence schedule.Originally Posted by Koz
Lexus recommends 7500 mile change intervals using conventional oil (under normal conditions). The factory fill (which is conventional) has proven to still provide safe protection at 10K miles. The IS has a large capacity sump which also helps provide longer drain intervals. Any good synthetic will safely protect your engine for a minimum of 10K miles. With testing, I wouldn't be surprised if SSO could just be changed once a year and not even worry about mileage.
Once the warranty is up, a once per year oil change will work for me since I put about 14K - 15K miles per year on the IS.

You don't need to drain your oil if you are just replacing the filter.Originally Posted by lilthanh19

You should be able to just remove the filter element (canister) and let all that oil drip out, and then replace your old filter. I don't remember that much coming out, but check your oil levels afterwards just in case and top off if needed.
