I would do 50% on the windshield. I was going to do that on my truck but then realized that I have to remove my registration and inspection stickers once a year. Anyway, I put 20% on my front side windows and put 5% on top of the factory 20% on the back windows. It is dark at night but you can still see fine when backing up. You just have to take your time.

I have tint on the front windshield 10 or 15% I think and 35% all around the other windows. I can see find and it cuts the glare and keeps the UV and heat down on the dash in the summer. No problems here. Dont' skimp get the best. Don't do the half strips...I think it looks bad and draws attention to a line across the window. My .02

Any licensed tint shop that wants to stay in business will, at the very least, have you sign a waiver for having them install something that's illegal. The waiver essentially releases them from liability if you do something stupid, such as getting your windshield illegally tinted and then killing someone in an accident.
I know it's all about appearances, but think about that waiver before you tint your windshield. In the unlikely event that you get in an accident later on, you could (at the very least) be found partially at fault due to the tint. At worst, you could be financially ruined and dropped from your insurance carrier (or worse).
Nobody here is trying to be your mom, but at least give it some thought before you put yourself in that position.

Same difference, they're covering their tracks because you're choosing to break the law. This is even worse, because you have no proof of getting it done there, so good luck if you need a bad tint job repaired. If they're disreputable enough to do illegal/dangerous tint jobs, then they probably aren't big on customer service either.

I read somewhere a while back ago that a guy had tinted his windshield. He did and got into car accident. Well I don't know if it was his fault or not, but the prosecution had upped the charges because he "purposely obstructed" his view. I don't know about you, but to me it's not worth it.
