Hey guys, I did a search but couldn't find an exact answer so I thought I'd ask here as I need to get winter tires in the next few days and I'm not sure what setup to go with. I'm on the fence about getting 17's or 18's. If I went with 18's, I would use my stock rims but I'm a bit hesitant on using 255 tires on the rear. But I was wondering what if I went with 225/40/18 all around? Would that cause any problems as the rear wheels would shorter in terms of overall diameter compared to stock? (This is what I couldn't find out.)

I guess the easiest thing would be to just get 17s and use the stock rims as summer but part of me wants to get some nice 19s for the summer and not have to worry about trying to find someone to buy my stock rims.

Please post what setup your running for the winter and your experience with them. Thanks in advance.

i think Town Fair Tire is local to me, but you should look into a similar chain up there to see if you can find a winter wheel package.

i got B-stock rims and 4 brand new winter tires for $999 mounted and balanced. the rims are used, but have not even 2 scratches on each, and the tires are hankook Ice bears. 225/40/18's all around. the only "negative" to the 225's in the rear is that your speedometer is off by 3-4 mph. if speedo reads 75, i'm doing 71-72. Also, in dry weather, you can spin the tires easy because they're not as wide....but you shouldnt be driving like that on winter tires anyway...its not what they're meant for.

if you want 19's, i'd get the nice rims, and use your stock rims with 225's all around. that way you can rotate them every winter and get more time out of them.

i went with 17" all around and actually got them from another member that moved Techo82. I think 17" is better IMO as they are for snow and ice. i can take pics later of the setup as it doesnt look so bad on the car either. they dont have the TPS in the rim but i dont have any troubles. the rims are in the garage next to the car so when i fire up the car reads them and i have had a few times where the check system goes on...but once i pull back in the garage at night its back to norm. I would assume you get some heavy snow where you are and in IL we get a few good storms. good luck on your decision.

get the smallest wheel tire combo available for winter. 17's with 225 45 17 all the way around would work well.

i was planning on getting 16"s for my winter rims... would this be inadvisable?

I got Dunlop M3's on my stock wheels for winter, and the stock tires on G-Spyders for summer

Hmm so it seems like a lot are just going with the same size as summer for winter. Can anyone with this setup comment on how it handles and drives in the snow? Most of my driving is in the city so I guess it shouldn't really be an issue.

225/40/18 front and 245/40/18 rear Blizzak LM-25.

Awesome on bare/icy/lightly covered roads, mediocre in the thick stuff.

In snow mode with the Dunlop M3 snow tires in stock sizes plus snow mode it was very predictable with tons of grip, it was funny passing all the Jeeps in the slow lane

Why isn't there a 16 inch option in the poll? This is stock on the IS250, right?
Anyway, that is what was recommended for my winter tires, and they work fine.

For the IS350

All the dealers in the GTA (Toronto) are selling 225/45/17 all around as reco'd by Lexus Canada. I put my Dunlop Wintersport 3D's on a set of 10 spoke GS rims I picked up off of eBay. Dealer wanted $3k for the set, I paid $1400 including new tires, new rims, and set of TPMS...

canadaIS, I didn't include 16s in the poll because they won't clear the front brakes of the 350.

Mines 225/50/17 all around and the front rubs a bit when I turn and brake at the same time.

I'd bet this poll would be alot more accurate if it had 225/45/17 as an option...

most people get 45's on 17 instead of 40's..


mine are studless nokian hakkas in 225/45/17 all around, awesome tires!
