But your service tech. felt doing it at 15k was critical, huh?

Tell me about it. I just changed my cabin and engine air filters after about 45k KM (so i guess around 27-28k miles) and OMG, it was disgusting. The engine air filter could have lasted another few thousand but he cabin was simply done.

I haven't done my cabin filter yet, but I will ASAP. My car only has 14k on it actually, but I live in a rural/farm area so the roads are very dusty etc. My engine air filter was pretty filthy.

Yes, he said on all the RWD Lex's the first diff change is pretty crucial. The magnetic drain plug will have TONS of debris on it from break in, and the fluid is pretty well contaminated. It should make it to 60k and all (the magnet should be strong enough to keep building up debris on it, though a lot of it would get knocked off and remain in the diff when you pull the plug out if too much builds up) and the fluid is designed to last to 60k. But he just said its one place he'd actually step-up the schedule. He said after that first change, its pretty much good forever (though I still plan to change it at 60k).

I dunno...I'm sure your friend is knowledgeable and has the best of intentions, but if Lexus thought we needed to change the diff fluid at 15k, I don't think they'd be shy about making it part of the scheduled maintenance.

My understanding was that the metal shavings were part of break-in. I'm guessing that means the "build up" of metal shavings at 60k shouldn't be significantly more than it is at 15k, but I could be wrong.

The diff in my Supra has had metal on the magnet every single time I've changed the fluid in it over the last 144k miles and 7 changes despite running Red Line 75w-90 GL-5.

Differential service life is typically 500k miles with the factory recommended change intervals. Unless you drag race or track your car, you would be wise to follow the recommended intervals.

When i did my 15K, it was for $250.00 in Norcal.

It included the following:
Oil/Filter Change
Differential Fluid Change
