I just crossed the 12k mileage threshhold and am now on my third CD changer. Tomorrow I will be calling the dealer to order my fourth since tonight my unit failed despite the fact that it is loaded with six store bought CDs.

Tomorrow I will threaten to invoke the "lemon law". Let's see how responsive Lexus is when I ask them for my $50k back.

I thought the lemon law only applies to major mechanical parts? Good luck with Lexus buying back your car just because of the CD player.

Lemon law in Maryland applies to anything that materially affects the value, use, or enjoyment of the car. If "non-mechanical" (like a cd player), the dealer has four tries to fix it before the law can be invoked.

BTW, all I want is for the dealership to find a permanent solution to the problem. Swapping an ineffective cd player for another ineffective cd player (which has been done twice so far) just isn't good enough - not for me, and not for Lexus. The lemon law threat (which I have not yet made) would be intended to inspire my dealership to find a better solution.

This is my first Lexus. Everyone told me that vehicle quality and Lexus service would be outstanding, and that has certainly not been my experience to date.

I don't understand how dealers can tell you to just use regular CD's and you shouldn't use burn CD's.

If they marked mp3/WMA on the CD player, what do they expect? At least I haven't found any major record company that sells their CD's by using mp3's.

I found it to be funny for them to say that. If the unit is Mp3/WMA compatible than it should support the usage of burn CD's. To tell their customer that they should only use Music CD's is almost telling people that their product can't live up to their reputation.

The Maryland lemon law says nothing about enjoyment. The clause you refer to says:

"Any one problem that substantially impairs the use and market value of the vehicle that was not corrected in four repair attempts;"

You'd have a hard time convincing a court that a recurrent problem with a cd player meets that criteria.

I just experienced the same problem with my ML system. IS the CD/DVD player a separate unit than the Nav? The reason I ask is that I did the Nav Override switch and I'm wondering if I leave it installed, if they can say that it voided the warranty on the CD player. I guess I could just take it out to be safe, but I'd rather not have to pull the dash apart again.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I checked and found nothing regarding not using burned CDs. As far as anything on a CD that could damage a player, it could only be the dimensions and they are the same for pressed CDs as for burned CDs. The only difference is the coatings sandwiched between the plastic layers. Any problem that would show due to coatings would be the inability for the laser to read the data. Then it would just eject it - the player would not be damaged. Now if you are playing CDs with labels of any type stuck on, or dirty, or pizza-finger goo on them, then all bets are off. Those things will cause problems.

My answer - just give me a USB jack on the front of the player so I can plug a flash drive into it. Load all my mp3's on it and no moving parts to break down.
