Default 5W-30 to 5W-20 recommendation

Hi all,

I have done searches both on the forum and google but cannot find the actual TSIB pdf from Lexus that recommends 5W-20 for the IS instead of 5W-30. Could someone please be kind enough to post it? Thank you.

Thank you very much! Just got the oil change done this afternoon at a Toyota Dealer; brought in my own oil (Mobil 1 5W-20) and filter, was charged $9 for labor.

I did have a quick question though, for anyone to respond to. The manual says for an oil change the drain and refil amount is 6.6 quarts, and I watched the tech drain the oil out completely and refil with 6.6 quarts (this is a small Toyota Dealership and they are very cool with letting customers in the bay and watch them work on their cars) However, when I check my dipstick, it reads slightly above the top notch, about a quarter inch. Is this normal?

If it were me, I'd drain out about half quart or so. It could be that they got in a hurry/impatient to let all of the old oil drain out but a 1/4" over the full is a lot.

^I couldn't agree more. Easy way to do this is to just remove and drain the oil filter and element - that will drain about half a quart and get you to the appropriate level.

p.s. - you got a great deal on the labor for an oil change!!!

I don't think I've ever needed to put 6.6 qts back in after draining. I usually drain it (while hot) with the driver side of the car raised higher than the passenger side until it quits dripping then fill it with 6 qts. That usually results in the level being right in the middle of the tick marks on the dip stick.

I guess you didn't ask for change from the $10 bill you gave them.

Great deal.....I wouldn't worry about it, but YMMV.

So is this TSB saying 5W-20 is better for the IS (in terms of mileage, cold start, etc) than the 5W-30?

Are there any more technicalities to changing to 5W-20 that someone could explain to me please?

Thanks!

Your first oil change is free, availalble at any Lexus dealership. After that, it's all on you.
