Who cares!! If they say they changed it and it goes in the service log as changed, and something does go wrong, then it's covered under warranty. If you change it yourself and something goes wrong, then you'll have a much more difficult time proving it wasn't your negligence. Always take it to Lexus, never cut corners by taking it anywhere else, just so it's in the Lexus system, if for no other reason.

it was tight when I opened it the first time @ 5000K, the oil filter wrench is the same size with a corola or a celica one... It is not right when the tech does not have the right tools.. that is bs...If you didn't make the mark to prove it, he could just lie to you that he has changed it. You got them this time bro...

I don't see the point in marking the filter housing. The new IS has a replaceable element inside the housing, so basicallly marking the housing doesn't really tell you anything.

That sucks. Luckily you marked your filter and caught them red handed. Wonder how often this kind of thing happens. Sound like the guy is BSing. He could of not did anything to begin with. Not changing the oil and the filter, but says that he only changed the oil when you confront him.

I am glad I have been changing my oil ever since the 5,000 mile free oil change.

Thanks for the alert.

To confirm the oil filter change, just mark the filter with a permanent marker before the service is performed.

That won't necessarily prove anything. The filter element is replaceable as previously mentioned, and the housing can be reused.

I just pay for the oil change at a Lexus dealer and trust that they're doing the job. Life's too short to sit around biting my nails over an oil change, and in all likelihood, if you hadn't caught them, you would have never had any reason to know better. Oil change intervals are much longer on some cars, which leads me to believe the filter won't self destruct at 5k miles.

If you think they cheat you, open the oil filter. You will see the different between the new one and the old one.

I think they may be referring to how hard it would be to line them back up exactly as it was. So if your mark lines up exactly then you have an idea that they probably didn't change the filter.

That's what I was thinking... perhaps go back to your dealer that did the 5k and ask them about it too.

If you are going to go through all the work of getting under the car, removing the plastic cover access the filter and such, why not take a wrench, filter wrench and drain pan with you are just change the oil yourself?
