I voted even and here is why.
I've never seen a S4 time in the 4s, most are low to mid 5s.
I've only seen the IS barely make a 4.9 run once and times are also in the low to mid 5s.
Amazingly, this is a DRIVERS race! I love both cars!
wow you guys give the S4 too much respect...lets face it. the V8 makes 340 hp and still cant beat out a 300hp V6. it has quattro which means it will be faster in the rain, but in the twistys?
Yes, Audi's all wheel drive helps in the twistys, too. I owned the older generation (B5) S4 and test drove the B7 extensively, both were much more confidence inspiring to drive fast than the IS.
the interior is the same as you get in the jetta.
Surely you jest. Audi interiors are the benchmark by which other automakers judge their cars. The one in the S4 is particularly nice, with Recaro seats and real aluminum (not silver plastic like the IS) trim.
....ask the parts departments respectively. Sure its German, it handles, it looks good, it makes a statement with a badge... I have not looked at the numbers at all, but I would have to hope the mighty S4 is faster than the IS350 (mostly becuase I have not seen too many Lexus cars be all that fast) but when it comes down two it..... which one is worry free? Ask previous owners... that are standing the in the parts department or in the service line (if there is a line in both dealers)
I have only had fun in the B6 S4 once, and the B5 S4s were plenty of fun but they broke quite a bit.
Like everyone else said, IS350 and S4 is not in the same class. I don't know what class S4 is in anymore, but since it wasn't able to compete with M3s, the RS4 has been used as the comparison in magazines and tv shows (in the UK anyway). So maybe the S4 has been kicked down but at the price, I guess you can only compare how fast they are, not really class vs class either way.
i told my friend with the s4 about this thread that i started, and he claimed that he could beat me, and ofcourse i disagreed. After a bunch of useless arguing, we decided to just race. This is exactly how it happened, and dont tell me its the driver because hes a greatt driver when it comes to stick.
1. We started off the line, and he launched, so he was in front right off the line for the first 50 feet..and then i caught up to him and was slightly in front of him for a little bit. We got to about 80-85, and then i knew i was done. Even though i was in front (not by alot) up to 80-90, as soon as i got around 95, he just coasted right by me. Made me feel very stupid for trying to race a v8. So overall, the IS350 will be in front until about 80, and then it has absolutely no chance. We weren't racing to a certain point, so i guess 0-60, the IS takes it, and long distance, the IS gets burned.
The 5.0l V8 from the IS-F ONLY makes 400HP. I guess that is too low too since the smaller 4.2L V8 from the RS4 makes 420HP. So who got more RESPECT??!! I don't think the IS350 get any respect for a performance sedan. Reliable and luxurious? Yes. High performance? No.

The S4 may have 34 or some HP more but considering it's a V8, that's too low! Just look at the IS-F, it has V8 and it's gonna put out more than 400+HP!!
So, as for getting more RESPEC.........it should be the IS350 coz it's got smaller engine, less HP, better interior, MUCH cheaper, and almost same performance while being in a different class!!
The result does not surprises me. He got a quick start due to the AWD. You were able to catch up to him because of less weight and quick shifting transmission. But he eventually passed you because his V8 just had way more torque to keep him going at higher speed.

Hmmm, I guess you dont know what "more than" 400HP means. It means, it will be More than 400HP. Not "Only 400HP"....As far as the IS not getting respect. That is just stupid. How many sedans click off a 0-60 in under 5 seconds and have a 13.5sec QM. http://www.roadandtrack.com/article....rticle_id=4462
All cars have their perceived negatives The S4 is 4000lbs(3946) you think that gets respect? That is woeful... and its a gas guzzler.Id take an IS350 over S4... any day of the week. If I wanted "respect" in a sedan, I would get an EVO or STI and Destroy the S4... in every performance category.
Does the S4 really handle better than an IS350? It may have better steering feel, but its weight is attrocious. Does the s4 really get the respect that you are speaking of? Its a nice and fast ride but in the twisties, its weight has to slow it down a lot.

It seems that people don't understand or don't bother to read what Lexus is saying!!! They said "MORE THAN 400HP"!!!!!!! Did you get that? or Didn't bother?
As for S4 comparing with IS350...........well........there should be none. Because it's not even in the same class! The reason I brought up the IS-F is because it is an M3 competitor and M3 is an S4 competitor, so technically and logically IS-F would be S4 competitor! And if you don't realize that the IS350 costs much less than an S4 and almost keeps up with it for about 80mph........than I don't know what to say!
And lastly, if it is "okay" for you to brag about how the 4.2L is "SMALLER" than the IS-F's 5L than why don't you consider the V6 vs. V8 in the IS350 and S4, respectively!!! Not only it has 2 less cylinders but, it's also a 3.5L vs. 4.2L!.................
...........any questions?

Agree with all your points but the RS4 is the M3 competitor.
The S4 is in no-man's land : not good enough to compete with M3, AMG C-class, IS-F or CTS-V but still considered a step up from the normal A4 sedans.

I don't think that's true! You really think that a car that has an MSRP of $66,000 is comparable to an M3 that starts at like $48,000?!??! I highly doubt that!
The RS4 is comparable to 5-series, and M5. NOT M3!
Does it make sense to say that A4 goes with 3-series, S4 goes with X? And RS4 goes with M3?!? It makes MORE sense to compare S4 with M3 and RS4 with M5! Class for Class, Price for Price!

I disagree. The A4, S4 and RS4 share the same body, which is roughly the size of the BMW 3 series (compact sport sedan/wagon).
The 5 series and M5 are larger (mid-size sport sedan/wagon), and compare with Audi's A6, S6 and RS6 (scheduled to be introduced at the Geneva car show).
The M5 and RS4 may be in the same price class, but they are in different vehicle classes.
