I admit, the plastic "metal" is not of the best quality material, but the look of it makes the interior of the car clean and simple. It isn't as prominent as the wood grain, and it isn't as "rice" as carbon fiber or color matched plastics such as the FJ Cruiser.
I think Lexus could have made it a polished alloy instead of plastic, but that would be more susceptible to scratches and staining, and more costly than the woodgrain option.
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT : What other types of trim would everyone else here want?
Carbon Fiber?
Body Color-matched interior trim?
Piano Black?
Blackwood?
Interior leather-matched trim?
Louis Vuitton monogram?
I love the wood trim, it is one of the reasons I prefer the IS's interior over that of the BMW.
I agree with you and wouldn't change anything in the interior of the car, the wood , chrome and black leather make a very nice and elegant combination that any other addition will ruin it. I think the IS like the name says it is a luxury filling sport sedan is not a 100% sport car if i wanted a 100% sport car i rather buy the nissan 350Z IMO.
This is a question that will never be answered as there is no 'right' answer. Some like wood, other's not. It depends on how you perceive your car. Just like your choice in spouse/girlfriend/boyfriend, everybody's taste is different. No right or wrong answer.

As Evitzee says + : Ugly, as beauty, is in the eye of the beholder...and nothing can change either!
I agree, the picture describe it all. for those who want aluminium/plastic you can even get a nissan sentra with these options.
I can also get a $20,000 Kia with wood grain that IMO looks better than the wood in the IS... I can see if this were GM-style plastic, but come on, people - let's keep this civilized. If you prefer wood, great! But to say that the plastic looks "cheap" on this car is stretching it a bit. Evitzee was dead on - to each his own.
