If you get a check engine light does this automatically mean something is wrong with the engine,Powertrain, drivetrain? and should be covered under warranty to fix?
Service person is telling me that the parts will cost 300 and with labor 800 to fix after I got a check engine light come on. Am I getting screwed? or should something related to check engine be considered under warranty?
Did you change anything, like the intake. Did you already take it to a dealer for him to give you that quote. If you did what parts is he talking about?
...Service person is telling me that the parts will cost 300 and with labor 800 to fix after I got a check engine light come on...
That doesn't sound like a loose gas cap. It also sounds like you're getting the run around. I can't imagine a CEL with consequences like you describe this early in the car's service life unless you modded something and they are working you over because it's modded.
check engine light has to do with emissions. emissions components usually have a longer warranty than the rest of the car... and yes, the gas cap could cause the light... but if it's tightened then the light should go off... try another dealer's service advisor.
That's a little narrow. CELs can be lit for a lot of reasons that are not emissions related, but are definitely good reasons to check the engine. For example, you will get a CEL if any one of 18 DTCs are activated in relation to your electronic throttle control. It has nothing to do with emissions, but definitely causes the ECM to go into failsafe mode, set DTC(s), and light the MIL and the CEL to let you know there is a serious problem with the engine control.
Sure the gas cap being loose will give an evaporative emissions DTC, MIL, and CEL. But I would hope the gas cap doesn't cost $300 and take $800 labor to install.
