I know this question may start a controversy and kinda jack your thread. But is the valentine better or about the same as the Escort 8500 in primarily city driving?
Quick answer: V1 is better in all driving conditions. I know - I have them both, in 2 different cars.
Here are some pics, as i said earlier the install only took about 20 minutes. It was realtively simple, and the only difficult parts are stripping/soldering the wires, and getting the little black wire cover to clip back onto the mirrior.
I got it off of valentineone.com, and it cost me $400 + shipping which was 5 dollars for ground.
I don't mean to offend, but I've never seen a more obnoxious looking hardwire setup ever. Hardwired RD's are supposed to be LESS noticeable, not more.

It really isnt that noticble, I just need to get a shorter power cable, and also it would look less obvious if i mounted it up against the headliner, but i dont like it that close to my head. Also im too tall to mount it like yours since my head would always be blocking the rear antenna.
Power is switched from the review mirror harness. Second push iginition turns on the V1 and turns off when the car is off. Tap the red wire of V1 cord to orange wire on the rear view mirror harness and tap the green wire of V1 cord to blue wire on the rear view mirror harness. That's it. I'm not concern about shorts since that's the fuse box's job! Works fine for me.
If you were to bring your car to any qualified technician, they would call a fuse box tap a mickey mouse job.
while i'm not entirely sure of the reprocussions of the fuse box, when i last had this type of thing done, the installer insisted on wiring directly from the ignition.
My biggest disappointment about the V1 is that it doesn't have true "City" mode. It falses more than any other radar detector I've ever had. BTW, my V1 (second one) is just 3 months old.

The V1 falses less than ANY other radar detector. My PP 8500 falses like a screaming Banshee, and when I put it in 'city' mode, the REAL alerts don't cross the threshold until it's too late, then they come on almost full blast, destroying my nervous system. I'll take the V1 anyday. I put it in Logic mode 5 years ago and haven't touched it once since, and that includes plenty of driving in Philly.

Your 5 year old V1 may false less than any detector YOU have ever had, but that doesn't say anything about the new V1. My Passport 8500 in "city" mode was AWESOME. It hardly ever went off unless it was a cop. I only got 1 ticket during the 3 years I had that detector, and that was from a motorcycle cop hiding under a bridge with laser. My V1 falses so much, I have to pretty much ignore it. I estimate that 95% of the alerts are not cops.
