I never realized that an 10+ hour job was considered an easy fix. Good luck though, at least you'll get a loaner for a couple of days.

EDIT:

And here's a portion of my invoice in case anyone wanted to see it.

Does this include the GS300 RWD as well? I have been reading in the different forum sections and there is little mention about the GS300.

My GS300 with 36k miles has a ticking sound coming from the engine bay at all times. Taking it in today after work to see what's up and go from there. Will update whenever I receive anything from the dealer.

I'd say it depends on the version of the parts and when you had the work done. Over a year ago, I had a previous version of this fix done to my car, when it was the most 'current' available. Since then, further updates have been introduced, and I've had my problem return, only to bring it back to the dealer for the second fix (now, the most current). Since then, the car has been fine, but it hasn't been a span of a year, yet. To say for certain that it won't happen again is a tricky wager, though we can only hope so.

That should just be your injectors, which is normal**. What people are describing in this thread, is a brief but distinct more audible grinding sound on startup.

Just received my car back, and there was no noise. I will be listening if it comes back

I noticed that the cranking noise happens more often when I start my car at an incline facing upwards. Rarely does it make noise when my car is on level ground. Anyone notice this?

Yup, I only hear it when I have to park in my gf's driveyway where my car is facing upwards. Also, about 2 years ago I did hear the occassional cranking noise even on a flat surface but that was when I had to park outside. Now I park in a garage (no incline) and I never hear the noise, unless I'm at my gf's place.

No. The first time mine did it I was on a very flat surface in a parking lot. I'm sooooo glad the F doesn't do this.

Just out of curiosity, what if I had this noise at startup issue and did not get it corrected. Would it continue on running like normal or will the engine eventually fail? I just don't want a b-rated tech tearing down my engine.

The long term effects are unknown, currently, but its something you may want to consider having fixed. A "B-rated" oversight from Toyota is currently causing an obnoxious cam grinding noise, which won't fix itself, whereas the dealer can be held accountable for their service work and a likely fix. I don't think I've read of any cases where people have had problems with specific technical work done, so again, its something to strongly consider if it bothers you enough.

The only other scenario is seeing what happens in the long term, likely when you're out of warranty.

FWIW, I didn't do anything about it and the noise went away by itself... It has been gone for several months now... I feel better this way than having someone tear my engine apart...

I think its funny because the service advisers pretend that they've never heard of the problem before. They know that it is a common issue. Bring it up.

I had mine fixed a 2 months ago. i brought the car in to newport lexus, told them it only happens on cold start up, described it as a starter type(like the starter gear is hitting the flywheel) metal on metal "grind" so they gave me a loaner and i went home.

They started it up the next morning, agreed it had the issue, started working on it right away and they had it fixed and ready for me by 3 oclock. Somebody said it was a 10+ hour job, i had expected to have my car at the dealer for 3 days or so. but they got it done in less than a day. I was amazed lol. no problems again yet.

It may be quiet now, but it's not fixed. It will come back, and likely at a time when you'd rather it didn't. When mine did it in front of my father-in-law (a Mercedes guy), and he looked at me like "This is why you buy Mercedes" I was ready to move on immediately.

Wow are you serious? I uploaded the actual portion of the INVOICE and it's right on this page. It contains all the parts numbers and other relevant information.
