Default MAF failure

Just some info. maybe it happend to you

I was driving this past friday and on the way home i get a check engine light and practically all my cars power shuts off.. check vsc comes on and skid light. I turned my car off after i was barely able to pull into a driveway and when i turne dit back on everything was fine again. FUnny thing is my friend called me that night and started freaking out cuz she said her car was acting up and she describerd the exact same symptoms as what happened to me.

anyway i went to dealership today and they did a diagnostic test (under warranty) and they said the MAF sensor was messed up. I DON"T have an AF intake or anything, but they told me filters like K&N could cause the sensors to malfunction from the oil on the filter. Pretty much the sensor was saying the air passing thorugh was too hot when its not and it shut the car down. They told me anyone that had this probelm should goto dealership because if one day it fails 100% your car may not start anymore and you'll have to get it towed

anyone else have this problem?

This is a very common problem when oiled filters are used. They're almost always over-oiled, and the excess tends to collect downwind on the MAF. This is why I just stick with stock parts.

Driving with an engine air filter dirty may also be a cause of MAF sensor failure.

mannn this sucks.. I'm the girl ihkskim is talking about lol

I've only had my car for about 5 months, 6000 miles on it so i dont think its the air filter thats dirty. Also read about the same problem in the GS forum after doing a search.

I had my stock filter on for over 13k miles with no MAF issues. I'm now running a K&N filter and have been for the last couple thousand miles with no issues yet. The oil on the K&N was not excessive. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Very common problem when running oiled filters. I always clean mine with some carb cleaner after oiling. Good to go each time. Lexus will always replace them vs. cleaning them. I have seen one where the oil allowed a very small piece of debris to stick to the sensor wire rendering the car stranded. $600.00 later in a misdiagnosed fuel pump and tow-I cleaned their MAF and she was good to go. Total cost-around $0.10.

Default Oiled Filters

Very correct. If you use to much oil you stand a good chance of messing up the MAF sensor. Be careful when you service your filters the spray aersol is best not the pump, more even coverage. And follow the directions

Dirty air filters shouldn't hurt a MAF. The only negative effect a dirty air filter has is loss of power and fuel economy. Dirty air filters actually filter BETTER than clean ones.
