Default Engine Braking Question....

So I keep reading in different threads that engine braking is good and better so you don't wear down your brakes and stuff. But to what extent do people use the engine to slow down?? I was cruising at 80 the other day and slowed down by using downshifting... is this ok??

I was also wondering is it ok on the engine if you downshift, and the rpm jumps up to like 4500-5000??? I was going down a hill and downshifted, and it rev'd up real high....to about 4900.

I usually use engine brake when im on the sports mode speeding and needed to brake a little harder than usual.
Obviously if your in 5th gear you dont drop it at 3rd gear right away go down the gear slowly.

You're going to get a lot of differing opinions on this. My $0.02 is that it is much cheaper to replace brakes than engine components. It's completely acceptable to use engine braking on long hills, but I try not to force downshifts and get the revs up when I can hit the brake pedal instead.
