I'm a little confused, I've heard people say here at CL that a clear coat comes with every new car. well then why did my sales person try to sell me one? Also, if it's not standard and I have a choice between a clear bra and a clear coat what are the factors I need to consider before choosing one or the other? And one last Q - should I get a my car tinted before or after the other work? Thanks

Clear coat paint refers to the clear (non-pigmented) top coat paint that is applied over a colored base coat paint, and is found on most vehicles built in recent years. Clear coat paint increases the vehicle's paint durability, gloss and resistance to harmful environmental effects.

A clear bra is a tape-like material, typically made by 3M and similar companies, that covers the clear coat and the paint to protect from rock chips, bug stains, etc.

You can get the car tinted and apply the clear bra at the same time. It's the same process: the adhesive used to apply the tint on the windows is the same adhesive used to apply the clear bra on the hood and bumper.

To do both the tint and clear bra for a car takes about 6-8 hours, so expect to surrender the car for a day.

After all the discussion of paint chipping, I actually asked my salesman about an extra clear coat for protection. He told me they come with 3 layers of paint and 2 layers of clear coat from the factory, and an extra clear coat would probably be of little benefit.

Thanks for the help guys. Although I know what a clear coat and a clear bra are, I was not sure if what my dealer was pushing was something I really needed. I definetly want the tint and clear bra but I think I'll pass on the $400 clear coat.
