Lexus 10k Service
went to the dealer for the 10k oil change... and they tell me it time for the 10k service...
I just had the free 5 k service before and already there is another service.
So i ask them what is included in the service...
1. rotate tires... last time they rotated my tires they put the rear wheels on the front and it messed up my alignment.
2. Oil change... the only thing i came in there for.
3. "Tweek" the drive shaft. so i say "tweek" the drive shaft... what exactly is that? They tighten the drive shaft? why is it loose to begin with?
So i ask them the cost and says 160 dollars...
Is tweeking the drive shaft legit? or is the 10k service not necessary?

The rear rims are tires and a different size on mine. Tell them you rotate the tires everyday when you drive it.
I have a 4WD 4Runner and the manual states that the driveshaft flange bolts need to be checked for tightness at certain intervals. So I used to check them whener I crawled under there to grease the many nipples. Now keep in mind that I drag my truck through some god-awful trails, I've disassembled both axles to install locking differentials and at 100K miles they still have never come loose. I don't bother checking them anymore.
$160!! Yikes!
Hey, has anyone else noticed that the IS appears to have two gas tanks?

i dont believe in this scheduled maintainance stuff. My 2000 prelude I never took it in for anything, only did oil changes, coolant changes, need to do fuel filter and maybe tranny fluid soon, thats it. Only had one problem and it cost 175 to fix.

But beware of the difference between manufacturer required and dealer recommended service. The dealer will often try to add on a bunch of unnecessary work.

This is was I do to the cars I have.
Oil changes (Every 4k Miles)
Tranny flushes
Air filter every 10-15k miles
Coolant flush at 60k
Tune Up (100k miles, spark plugs, fuel filter, etc)
Diff fluid change at 20k miles if RWD.
All my cars ran to 200k+ miles before I sold them.
I NEVER believe the dealer when they say that crap. They just want to make money. Probably to make up for the free oil change they gave you at 5k miles.
TimboIS is on the money with the warranty requirements. But I'll add that thanks for the federal Magnuson-Moss Act Tie-In sales prohibition, they can't require that you have that service done at your Lexus dealer unless they provide it for free. Since they don't, you are free to bring it to any shop or even do-it-yourself. Make sure the work is done right, and keep good records and your receipts.
With regard to 4TehNguyen's Prelude; if he still has it, he's probably getting close to the maintenance interval for the timing belt change. I'm pretty sure that engine has an interference design (pistons smash into valves when timing belt breaks), so if he elects to ignore that particular item on the maintenance schedule, he may soon learn a VERY expensive lesson.

ask yourself if you were buying a used car from someone and they said "i don't believe in that maintenance crap, i did all the work myself or someplace else that was far cheaper. i don't have any records but..." would you buy that car?
of course you don't have to have the work done, but you have to admit overall it's better if you could do it, no?

I keep a spreadsheet showing the date, mileage, shop (or indication of DIY), parts and labor costs for each scheduled and unscheduled service item, along with a manila folder with receipts to back up the spreadsheet.
I've sold two cars privately, both at higher than Edmunds private party value, to people who understood that regular 5,000 mile DIY oil changes with Mobil 1 are better than 7,500 mile oil changes at the dealer.
