Nav System - Worth it?
Pimp350,
Your logic still escapes me. Of course all those items can be repaired, including the nav. And the inconvenience of not having them available while they’re being fixed is true for all of them. I’ve gone without a telephone in my house for three days this year, and I’d certainly rather go without my car’s A/C or radio for the same period. I also lost my big-screen TV for three weeks in January, having to watch the Super Bowl on an old 19” clunker until it was repaired (Thank goodness the frig still worked so I could get a cold beer.). Give me the nav going out any day.

I'm sorry folks, I'm glad to hear all of you enjoy your NAV Lexus makes the best NAV in my experience BUT I will never get a factory indash NAV. Most NAV's today are DVD driven and mechanical. 5-7 year predicted life span in most computers at home and less than that in a heat extreme, jarring violent environment as in a car. Remember, it was a $2,500+ option - they don't fix it when it breaks - they replace it. Also, if the NAV breaks, it's not just the NAV it's your environmental controls as well. If you are going to hold on to your car for more than 50K miles and it breaks; get ready to choke up $3,000.00 fast to have it "REPLACED." Any $100.00 to $400.00 Nav ugly on your dashboard/window works fine these days with no moving parts that break and you can take it with you as a walking NAV in your hand. If $2,500 original fee and 100% possible replacement fee of $3000.00 is OK with you and you can anyday afford it GREAT get it!
Every car I've had recently had a NAV - two. This is my first car I purposely asked for NO NAV. It's not just a 3 day fix at the dealership but the cost, heartache, someone tearing into my car, fear of "when will it break next," and when I sell the car I can't keep it and definitely won't get my money back injustice just makes this decision clear. BTW...both cars NAV broke right after the warrenty, bad luck I guess.

This is one of the BEST nav systems I have ever used. I've been using different nav systems for years. I even had one of the first "handheld" navs with my iPaq 3600 and Navman Sleeves.
I used to think my Nuvi 350 was the best Nav ever. While I still miss a few intuitive features from the Nuvi(very quick response time when entering destinations etc(internal memory vs. dvd based)
The IS nav is very very high tech in terms of total features. While it took a bit of getting used to, once familiar, along with voice commands and multiple view modes etc... its a world of difference from my Nuvi. How many other navs out there tell you which lane to be in when exiting and entering highway on-ramps??
Honestly if you are going to worry about the nav breaking, then the same could be said for a whole plethora of high end options. Why would people spend extra money for a mark levinson system when the amp could go bad or the speakers fry after the warranty is up? Pick out the few lemons that will get replaced under warranty and the remainder should be fine.
Now you want to start talking about a car that you DON'T want to get all the high end goodies? ANY BMW or MERCEDES. Anything HIGH END or TECHNOLOGICAL will cause you much more pain and heart ache from the little electronic gremlins.
Even if the nav stopped reading the dvd after 8 years I'm pretty sure all of the climate controls etc would continue to work. I don't think it would render the entire unit useless. I don't think Lexus would be so stupid as to allow that type of wiring. Lexus actually is known to have a lot of redundant systems in their electronics to bypass issues like these. Bring up your tech screen and you can check on the status of all components. Amp, Nav ECU, radio etc...

I agree with Punky..but if you are only planning on leasing or owning the car for 3-4 years then its not really a problem unless you are looking for a nav thats portable. I really didnt see a need for the nav personally, the only feature I am wishing the car had w/o nav is bluetooth.
I have only used the nav on several occassions, and was pleased to have it when I needed it. My decision to get nav had to do with getting the ML, which in Canada you also need to get navigation, resale value and the cool factor.
this is the way i see it... similarly to the sharkfin and the lexus emblems itself... its a sign of luxury! now, i realize something, if youre going to buy a luxury car... dont half *** on "luxurious" items such as the navigation... i mean whats 3k or whatever over a 60 month finance plan? 50 dollars a month?! I think ALL lexuses should have the navigation whether you use it (like me) or not... and you know what, it doesnt just give directions... ive used it to find the number to some stores and restaurants to call and make reservations. =) GET THE NAV for your lexus or dont go luxury at all. just my 2 cents
