Default Radar detector....

It occured to me that the 12V acc power outlet is in the center console armrest. Running the coiled power cable to my Passport is going to suck to say the least, assuming I can even plug it in given the orientation of the outlet.

Aside from hardwiring the detector, what are people doing to get their detectors hooked up?

There is also a cigarette lighter in the ash tray (located just forward of the transmission selector), which is much more convenient for plugging in a radar detector.

The V1 thread discusses why to connect for power.

I know your question asks for methods other than hardwiring the detector, but I remember seening some posts that people are tapping into the power that goes into the rear-view mirror with success. I have a V1 powered using the "kensteele" method.

Good luck on finding an applicable solution to your Passport.

Cheers,
Kermee

Default Solo S2

I'm using the Solo S2 by Escort. It is cordless... Uses two AA batteries, which last approx 2-3 weeks with daily use. The detector itself is incredible. All forms of radar and laser...

Not trying to start a detector war because I'm aware that the S2 is perfect for some based on convenience and price, but I purchased the S2 the day it came out years and years ago. I returned it the next day due to substandard performance. Having rec'd my first radar detector in 1985, the original Escort, I knew a good detector (for my needs) when I ran one. And the S2 was not.

I'm sure its gone through multiple iterations since then, if not a complete redesign.

Another interesting toy for those in "speed accident" prone areas may be the gizmo in the latest Import Tuner mag... 2 radar scrambling License plate frames that hook up using bluetooth to a little monitor you can hide in your guages or in a little eggshell looking contraption for those of us who are leasing.... From what I recall it wound up having the radar read a bad signal as if it couldn't get a read, and the light would flash inside showing you which side you got hit on (front or back). Intriguing.... I don't speed on the streets, but if I made a habit of it I might look into it.

isn't radar jamming/scrambing illegal?

Of course it is! But so is speeding and that doesn't stop most people! There's really no realistic purpose for radar detectors either, as I doubt few actually use their radar detectors to look for illegal radar setups and the like, but simply as a ticket prevention unit.

I personally wouldn't use either as I grandma drive on the streets and save my spirited driving for the track, with the occasional exception of the twisty road, and if I got busted doing that during the infrequent times it happens (last time I drove knowingly over the speed limit was on my favorite local road about 5 years ago with my Supra) then that's my fault and I deserve it because I know I was breaking the law.

As far as I know scrambling/jamming is illegal in all states but the fact that the devices exist at all is proof of their being a market for them, I was just noting it as I found it interesting.

Also kensteele I see you are not horribly far from my area... have you ever been to Mid-America Motorplex? They have a nice road course and drag strip. If you feel like tracking your car I'll let you know the next time we have a group going and what the buy in would be. Open to anyone else who would want to go as well!
