On a rear wheel drive car, the trunk is over the drive wheels. Extra weight over those wheels helps to increase traction. (On a front wheel drive car, the engine serves the same purpose)

FWD is an overhyped claim for winter driving superiority... I got around no better in my Toyota Matrix (FWD - All-Seasons) than I did with my Supra Turbo (RWD - Summer tires)... Best car I've ever driven in the snow? my '88 MR2 (Mid engine, RWD - All Seasons).... beautifully controllable at any speed. Mmmmmmmm... I miss that car.

Huh?!? Summer tires just don't work in the snow - no way - no how. Summer tires have the wrong rubber compound for cold temperature, no sipes, and are downright dangerous to drive in the snow. They are an accident waiting to happen.
