Default IS350 Overheats with AC

Hello i notice these past two weeks that my car overheats when i am in traffic with the ac on. I don't see any visible leaks and coolant level is good. Radiator fans kick on when they need too. I live in Texas, temperature is around 105 this week. I took a picture of the radiator. i saw a hose not connected to anything.

Not sure what the hose is but I'd start by back flushing the radiator and condenser as it looks a bit dirty. It's a pain but pull the fans to get it clean and try not to bend any fins.

And you checked the coolant level at the pressure cap and it was full?

Thank you 2013fsport, yes I checked the cap and it was full and I don’t see any leaks around the radiator.

Passenger side radiator fan is not coming on. Only driver side is cycling.

There's your problem. One fan is controlled by the thermostat and the other turns on to support running AC. I can't remember off the top of my head which is which (passenger vs driver) but when the car is warmed up one fan should turn on and the other will turn on when you add the load of AC. My guess is the AC fan isn't turning on. Warmed up and AC on both should be running.

Was the actual radiator cap checked to be in one piece? Myself, and many other forum members, have documented that over time they will fall apart.

Ok so i tried jump starting both fans but was unable too for some reason. Driver side fan works with ac on and off. Passenger side does not come on at all. Would replacing fans with a new one fix this issue?

If you opened the connector and powered it with 12v and it doesn't run, it sounds dead. If you spin it while connected to a volt meter it should produce voltage but thats moot point.

Check and swap both fan relays and fuses, verify there are no burned connections in the fuse panel or the fan wiring harness. Pebbles have been known to stick in the housing, stick the fan and kill the motor. Then when spun by hand, the pebble falls out leaving us with no logical understanding why the motor died.

I could be wrong but I think the left one is for AC as seen sitting in the car looking forward (left), and the right one is controlled by the ECU as the engine hits 208F/210F something like that! This would explain it cycling when stopped.

Does your AC blow cold? It should be 35F or so.

Measure the voltage at each connector (cable-side not the fan itself). You should see 12+ volts at one fan when the engine warms up and 12+ volts at the other when you turn on the AC (make sure to set it to max). If you are getting voltage at both fans then the fan has died. If you don't see voltage than the problem is upstream. I don't know if you can buy one at a time as it is a single assembly. Maybe somebody can chime in that knows the part numbers. Oh and when you are pulling the fan package out be super careful not to nick the radiator. You can cut a piece of cardboard and use it to protect the fins. Also be careful about running the engine for too long without the fan running it can overheat pretty quick.

Good luck!

I ended up swapping the cooling fan assembly and no longer have overheating issues.

Thanks for letting us know. It's good to see the problem has been solved.
