So I decided to keep my 5spd manual IS300 instead of selling it. This "sticky" situation with the dash is driving me crazy though. Before I start purchasing after market parts, I really want to get the car to almost pristine condition so I decided to begin with the interior.....
Everyone has write ups and stickies on refinishing the sticky dash and bringing it back to life. However I really dont want to waste my time and have the dash re-melt on me with this hot Florida weather.
my question is.....
Has anyone attempted to purchase a 2001 dash with the gold trims in fair or really good condition and repainted the trims in black????? I just think it would be more time efficient and overall smart since the material on the trims isnt that nasty crap that melts!
It would also in my opinion look more sleek and nicer. since the trim section on top of the cluster is the regular plastic material noth the sticky gunk on the rest of the dash trim.
Oh might be expensive to replace whole dash. I used Sol-u-Mel. It's super strong. Will take off all the sticky stuff, but looks very faded after. I rather have a faded dash then sticky stuff IMO. Or you could remove your whole dash, take off the sticky stuff and repaint.

ebay sells the 01 dash used for 200. Im sure I can get one at the junkyard or locally on CL for cheaper though..
I dont mind spending 100-200 bucks. I just want to know if anyone has ever painted the 01 trims black, and if so, if there is a write up or a special prep for this.
yes, replace it. There is an older thread on here about getting rid of sticky dashes(might be the GM engine swap thread) The 2001 dash is the one he recommended using to replace it. Have fun and when ur done you will much happier. I plan on doing the same to mine this winter.
Yes the 2001 is the only dash that doesn't have the sticky problem. It is hard to come by. There was a guy where I live that removes the sticky and repainted for $250. I'm sure your can find someone in your area. I also have a 2006 is350 and yep it's starting to get sticky...
