Exclamation IS tune up !!!

Hello guys,

My car will hit 90k miles soon, so I'm planning to tune up by that time. Any suggestions on parts, where to get and what need to be replaced or changed. My car is running very smoothly and has no problem so far, except the throllerbody sometimes makes sound like when you drink a empty glass of water.... is it dirty and what should I do to clean it up?

Major 90k service just involves timing belt and water pump with misc things that could/should be replaced.

Well, changing the timing belt and water pump is a must. OEM timing belt can be bought at your local Toyota dealership, or online. Dont go with any other brand if your stock. Water pump, thats up to you.
Change your spark plugs and 3 plug wires that go to the coil pack. You probably wont need to change the coil packs or the other 3 wires. They last a good while, trust me, I have 200k miles on mine. Done 2 timing belts and water pump changes. Still running strong.

How about the valve cover gasket and when you take out the intake manifold, do we need to replace the gasket as well.

You dont need to remove any of that. But if you do, replace the gaskets.

I did the tune up on mine and valve covers at the same time, it's pointless not to do the gaskets since ur right there. I did mine in about an hour so it was not bad just take ur time and be thorough

It is a bad idea to change gaskets that are in no need of changing. You have to when you open the valve cover or have a problem arise, but if you are not experiencing any issues why would you create a potential one.

Agreed if its not leaking I don't see the point in changing the gasket. Always seek professional help when changing major things like gaskets. If done wrong other issues may arise such as engine damage.

- Best advice for me would be

1) Top off all fluids (IE: engine oil, brake fluid,coolant,power steering,clutch fluid;if manual trans.)

2) Replace spark plugs

3) Replace Transmission Fluid

4) Oil change (synthetic oil, new oil filter)

5) K&N Air Filter

Don't overcomplicate it.

1. Get the T-belt/waterpump done.

2. New spark plugs, oil change, fresh air filter, change trans fluid. Check various fluids, tire pressures.

I'm at 231K at the moment with only a timing belt change, spark plugs and wires. Got to love the NA 2J.

I would have to disagree with this statement

Though it's not hard to get to them even if you have to take things off just for this.

Usually around 100k you would want to change these things even if they aren't leaking. Simply because they will either as soon as the tune up is done or sometime soon. I've seen it happen too many times. Not saying every car will but more times then none I've see this scenario happen.

From a Tech point of view of building a great customer base I would include this in the price of the tune up as far as labor goes. I wouldnt charge them to R&R valve cover gaskets, pcv, and grommet simply because it's all right there.

But from an @ home do it yourselfer sure don't touch them until they start leaking. But even as a diy'r myself I did mine because I hate to even start seeing oil/grime in the engine bay. I personally did mine @ 100k along with everything else while it was apart. Less in between work for the future atleast until it's time to do another timing belt job.

Mr.1.2 what vehicle you have @ 231k, an IS300 or Toyota Supra?
