Default 2001 IS300 steering pump problems

The other day, I started my IS and noticed a ticking/ knocking noise coming from the engine bay. While I was idling in park, I heard this noise which I believe is coming from the power steering pump. As soon as I turned the steering wheel, it stopped. But, when I put the steering wheel back to center position, it started ticking again. Earlier this month, I was low on power steering fluid, which is actually transmission fluid according to the cap and owners manual. I topped it off with trans fluid and the traditional whining went away. I have not had any other problems with the steering at all.

Here is the link to the youtube video I posted because I couldnt attached the file.

What do you think the problem is? If I need to get a new power steering pump, what would you recommend, rockauto, napa, junkyard...?

Is the fluid level correct? I have not heard a PS pump sound like that, previously when you added transmission fluid (which is correct) the rattle sound went away, or just the whine. If it was me I'd roll the dice on a used one and replace the front seal (easy enough) or you can open the pump and replace all the seals using this kit

Most people grab a reman I'm not crazy about them from the likes of Cardone and BBB Industries.

edit - it's possible the noise is coming from another rotating assembly, loading the belt (turning the steering wheel) could make it go away. Long shot but possible.

Only the whine went away when I added fluid. After the whine went away, a few days later it started knocking. I used a mechanics stethoscope and I am pretty sure it is the pump. I would like to try to rebuild it before spending so much a whole new pump. Thank you

Since the pump is knocking it might have too much damage for a rebuild. Search Ebay for 44320-53030 (filter by used if you want to go that route) there are some decent looking used pumps. Or get the BBB Industries pump on Rockauto I have one of their alternators it's working well.

The cardone one has a wholesale for only $75 right now, might jump on that compared to the BBB for $176... I'll check ebay.

Installed the Rock Auto cardone ps pump the other day. It was kinda difficult getting access to the banjo bolt. I ended up rounding off the head of it, then removing my ECU and box to get a better angle on the bolt. I eventually got it out. My return line was also dry and brittle and cracked when I was taking it out. I got a banjo/ union bolt or whatever you call it and the hose at a local pick-a-part. After all of that, install was easy, bled the system, and it's dead silent.
