Just wondering what you guys use/recommend for using the obd to monitor the vehicle. I don't necessarily need to clear codes but would like to see real time systems . ie: rpm, volts...

Yes. Torque app will give you plethora of info, the bigger the phone - the better. Then you can cram as many data displays on to it, as possible.
I used 2 VLMs on 2 hybrids. they worked fine but - every time I ended with ABS light in the dash after about 2 weeks of use. Will clear it, it will come back again. Same problem on TCH and HiHy.
So I am advising against VLM dongles for hybrids. Same time, they work just fine on non hybrids. Who knows...
It's actually a known issue with cheap dongles. It's been said that dongle that has wire connection to OBD2 port is NOT causing such issues, only fully wireless dongles that plug directly into the port.
