Default Thinking of purchasing rx400h

I was looking to purchase a 06 or 08 rx400h with 100k plus miles but had a concern about the hybrid batteries and how do you test them when going to check out the suv? Any info would be helpful and looking to purchase the first hybrid. This would be for my daughter who is just got her license.

No easy way to test the hybrid traction battery. If the car drives, the battery is working.

Check the repair history and see if the hybrid battery has been replaced. If it is still the original battery then they're approaching 11 to 13 year old and YOU should plan on having to replace the battery under your ownership. You should also check to see how these cars have held up over the years. I see people complain about power steering (electric assisted), AC (electric powered) and unlike non-hybrid cars these repairs are costly.

There's thread in 2nd gen hybrids on how to test hybrid battery with Torque app. Or, Dr Prius.
Personally, unless you buy that car in mint condition and for dirt cheap - I wouldn't. It's too old. Those batteries are said to have life span of around 11 years and that's not my opinion, I saw it on one of them Toyota sites. You looking at far upper end of that time-frame. Get her RAV4 or CR-V, much lighter on repair costs with very compatible mpg.

Well that info pokes a hole in my plans. I'm in the market for a commute vehicle for my daughter who's driving 80 miles/day to go to school and originally was looking for RAV4 or CRV but then saw an ad for a 2008 RX400h with 56k and thought it might be a much better option since it's much more car (luxury, etc...). However, if the battery life is more about age than miles then perhaps I should reconsider. Any thoughts appreciated.

As long as the battery is charging and stays charged over night it’s good. My 08 Highlander hybrid has over 150k miles and still works great. Get it for a good low price and don’t worry about it.

I have 237k miles on my RX400h, and so far the batteries have been holding up. They are replaceable by after market companies which offer steep discount compared to dealer, and with long warranties.

It is a much nicer ride than CRV/Rav4. The repair cost for Lexus is generally much higher. (especially at dealers). So far low reports on battery replacement. The replacement cost can be $2-4k by third party. The brake actuator seems to be a growing problem ($2k for the unit!). The inverter was a problem but should be taken care of under recall. Overall most people on this forum to likes this car and I get plenty of complement on it.Good luck
