Angry 2018 NX300h is already rusting --- :(((!

I've had this NEW car for about 3 months and only 3000 KMs (1865 miles). YES.. the Canadian winters can be harsh but this is ridiculous -- you would think that Toyota has learned its lesson by now (I also own a 2008 Tacoma which was recalled for rust issues and undercoating applied at no cost!). I NEVER expected patches of RUST to appear on a brand NEW car -- like within months of ownership! The Dealer says this is 'normal' -- just surface rust! That's BS as far as I'm concerned..

2018 NX300h rusts patch above the front right CV boot area!

Welcome to the forum.

The only rust I see is the surface rust on the one part in the top left corner, is that correct, or are other parts showing rust?

That is easy to fix w/ a disposable paint brush and a small can of flat black Rustoleum. Or leave it as-is because that part will never fail due to rust.

The contrast and exposure have been adjusted to permit better examination of the vehicle.

The only rust I see is on that top left part.

The other parts are dirty and could be cleaned by washing. The bare aluminum part has the expected oxidation. The bare aluminum part could be shined up to chrome appearance using an SOS pad, if desired.

The rust you see is on the steering knuckle, it is made of cast iron, which develops a quick flash/surface rust almost instantly. The part is cast, coated and then the areas that need machining are cut(the area you see rust is what was cut to allow the strut to bolt onto it). The time it will take for any structural defect to happen to that part will likely be 100 years. Have you ever noticed with a brake rotor if you dont drive the car after several days it has a flash coating of rust?

Yup, nothing to be concerned with...a lot of the underbody/subframe/suspension components will end up with surface rust on them.

They make entire bridges out of steel that is designed to rust. The actual rust
surface apparently protects the metal below. Obviously less cost of maintenance
than painting or as Raven 97990 points out, brake rotors can not be coated at all.

My vehicle operation includes occasional returning home on a moon high tide on a street slightly flooded w/ canal salt water.

The coating on one exhaust hanger had deteriorated, w/ rust starting, so I cleaned it up and painted that part while installing the hitch, as-shown in this topic.

Ropernvr...I have to agree with you 100%, it's BS!

For clean-up, I would recommend using a bristle brush and brush off the top layer of rust then buy a can of Eagle One NEVR-DULL from the auto parts store. Take a wad of the NEVR-DULL, using some elbow grease...it will all disappear & look new again!

Absolutely nothing to worry about and there's nothing wrong with the car. If it bugs you, clean it and spray a quick coat of paint on it.

Wow.. thanks for all the feedback. BTW, I’m not worried cause I don’t plan to keep the car beyond the warranty period. What is interesting is that only the attached components to the body (ie. Struts, ball joints) are showing signs of ‘surface’ rusting. The unitized body appears very well protected with a coating. I just never expected to see this kind of rusting within a few months of ownership! Otherwise, it is an awesome vehicle and the 2018 model was worth the wait for all the mid-cycle refresh.

The surface rust is normal and occurs with every car I've owned Lexus and otherwise.

What I do is apply a light coat of Rust Check once twice a year and virtually goes away.
