Default $5200 for new air conditioner?!

My air conditioner quit working last weeked. Dealer tells me that the compressor blew up and messed up the entire system with metal shavings, etc. So basically the whole system will be replaced and cleaned. They quoted me $5200. (It has 98,000 miles on it so it's not under warranty.) He said he called Lexus and said they would split the cost with me. So I'd only have to pay $2600. Has anyone had anything similar happen to them? I'm just wondering about the cost. Seems way high to me.

I'm a little skeptical. Not that the pump quit working, but that it contaminated the entire system. It seems like they should be able to flush the rest of the system after replacing the compressor. I would go for a second opinion.

If they're right and it DOES require complete replacement, it seems like Lexus covering half is a pretty great deal! Especially considering 98K miles. Unfortunately, that contributes to my skepticism.

MyLParts.com has just the compressor listed at $2,856.52 MSRP. So that makes me feel a little better finding that out. To get the compressor and the other parts for $2600 may not be so bad after all.

I had an 05 acura tsx, first gen, 04-06 had ac "grenade" like you described it... mine died too around 91k. People were up in arms that it cost between 1-3k. I imagine lexus parts cost more... good luck

No your system has filters. I'd get the parts change the filters and have it flushed out. It will pass through your condenser before the filter so you might have to change that too.

OP - Lexus meeting you half way is a good deal and a good gesture! The Lexus dealerships put some serious profit on parts and we already know the labor is very high. Had they not met you half-way, your best best would have been to buy the parts from somewhere like mylparts.com and find a good local mechanic. Most major metro areas have them. As an alternative, you could have also tried a Toyota dealership.

That seems about on par. My ABS Actuator went out last year. I bought mine CPO, so it was covered under warranty. All it was doing was making this strange squeaking noise, still worked though... Over $3500 just for that! Parts for the RX certainly aren't cheap. So if they're willing to go halves with you, It's probably a pretty fair deal.

Mine is better than yours. Lexus only quoted me to replace compressor for $3400 (maybe because my RX not Hybrid) and I paid $1700
