Default 2013 RX450h road trip

The wife and I made a 530 mile road trip yesterday in our week old 2013 RX450h AWD. We journeyed from Magnolia, TX, NW of Houston to Madison, MS. The Lexus performed as advertised averaging 27.5mpg, close to the 28 mpg highway specs. I've made the same trip in my 2012 Corvette Grand Sport averaging 28.6mpg and passed everything on the highway (wife was not in the car). We have taken to using an alternate route, avoiding interstate highways, the congestion and 18 wheelers. There is a lot of hilly terrain and lots of 75mph secondary roads in Texas, you have to love that. We tried to avoid jackrabbit starts but otherwise just drove.

The unit is comfortable, the seats a little firm after 500 miles but that is to be expected with any vehicle I think.

The NAV worked well, the passenger experimented with the info system and input radio stations. We like XM radio and it appears the Lexus may have the worst XM antenna or reception of any vehicle I've owned, really the only complaint I have.

Overall the Lexus is what we expected, economical to drive, very comfortable and all the gadgets one could wish for.

Congratulations on the new vehicle Don. The RX is a superb vehicle for long road trips - I'm taking mine away for a long weekend to Esperance (about 800km each way) in a couple of weeks. It will be the first longish trip in my hybrid, though I did a 4,000km road trip in my old 350 a couple of years ago. Loved every minute of it!

Sorry to hear about the 75 mph roads, must be tiring driving and the only sound you hear is the radio. They are so smooth at 75-80.

Glad you enjoy the RXh.

The RX is sweet at 75-80mph, downside is when you enter Louisiana at 55mph it is slooowww.

We will be making the 500 mile return trip this weekend, should be smooth. I'm sure you are looking forward to your trip.

We averaged 27.2 mpg on our 530 mle return tip, that is alo our overall average since new. We have many more highway than city miles. RX is sweet.

I did a short but routine road trip to Milledgeville today from North GA. Along the way, I filled up so the engine was well warmed up when the mpg (after fill up) gauge zeroed during the fill up. When I arrived at Milledgeville, it was right at 100 miles so this great mileage was not some battery only down hill run. The temps were in the low to mid upper 80's for the whole trip, only 20 miles was interstate at 70 with cruise. The rest was state highways through a couple of small cities. The average speed when moving was probably about 65mph.

Who can beat this ??? I was driving like I usually do, easy but definitely not hypermiling. There were even two (at least) times when I punched it to pass (geez I like that feeling when you floor the (h) at about 45 and the afterburners light). When I do that, I don't slam the throttle down but give it a smooth push to the floor and hang on

Can't beat it but close! My best tank full since getting mine almost 4 years ago now, 33.0 mpg. I usually fill up somewhere after half a tank.

I was pretty convinced that our 2010 RX350 was the best road trip car I have ever driven. Then we got the '13 450h, and it's even better. I might be proven wrong again some day, but as far as I'm concerned THIS is the best road trip car ever! It's the best blend of good handling, comfort, and ease of driving I have ever experienced. It's almost perfect for my personal preferences.

Personally, I think Lexus understands their customer base a lot more than people give them credit for.

Woody, that's a pretty good endorsement. I'm gradually accepting that 'Watson' will be around for quite a while God willing. I've come to realize what will finally occupy the other half of the garage. It won't be the Morgan 3 wheeler I was lusting after. But for near (or a tad more) something much more substantial. The all new 2014 Corvette with the reborn "Stingray" monicker .

We found the 'Eco Mode' and now are at 31.7mpg. Our RX450h shares the garage with my 2013 Grand Sport Corvette and Avlanche. The Corvette is ok on mpg also.

So did you do most of the trip at 75 mph? I wonder what your mpg would've been at 65. And I'm assuming you weren't driving in Eco mode.

I love driving our 2010 RX450h -- especially as we moved up from a six-cylinder '07 RAV4 Limited, mainly because I couldn't take the ride anymore. It'll go to my older daughter, who'll love it, moving up as she'll be from a '99 Nissan Frontier truck.
