Question about ES300h gas mileage. I received my 2024 ESh about 6 weeks ago, fresh out of the Georgetown factory. An all around delightful car and driving experience, my first hybrid Lexus. During the first 3 weeks, I got some crazy-high gas mileage, always over 50 mpg, once at 58.5. Now at 6-8 weeks old, my mileage has gone down to 45, 46. I’m not complaining, just curious. Does the new traction battery have to break-in, maybe come down to normal, ‘broken-in’ parameters? Would appreciate any insights from experienced hybrid veterans.
I've had pretty consistent mileage from my 300h the last 2 years. With all the different variables that impact mpg, has everything within your control been constant (e.g., tire pressure, route taken, acceleration input)? I don't think there's a "break-in" period for the batteries.
I've also learned that the onboard computer is pretty generous when it comes to estimated mpg, as much as by 1.3mpg.
Thank you for your observations. Yes, my driving style (feather foot), tire pressure, etc are pretty much consistent. I am guessing that the character of each trip is the biggest variable. The seamless coordination of the two energy sources is fascinating, and I look forward to a better understanding of the hybrid system.
Most likely your mpg settling due to variables out of your control. Of course, the longer you drive, most likely your mpg is going to lower, and this seems to be the case. Even if you take the same route each day, too many variables that impact your mpg.
The best way to judge MPG is over multiple tanks over a long period of time. Minimum 10. mid 40s indicated is about right though, over mixed driving. it's a quite heavy car so it's pretty good. Even at its worst, my ES300h got much better than my tiny CT200h. at least 6mpg better, measured.
I have had my 2022 es300h since Oct 2023 and have seen quite a variation in the mileage mostly due to temperature or driving conditions. Since last fall and over the winter, the gas mileage is highly influenced by temperature. In the fall and early spring my consumption was typically around 6l/100km. In the winter it would go up to just under 7l/100km. Now that the weather has gotten better I am seeing numbers under 5l/100km. I have also noticed that it does not take much in terms of driving style or road conditions to influence consumption. A quick accelration spurt on the highway on-ramp can easily add 0.1l/100km to the consumption. On the whole however I am quite satisfied with the average consumption mileage I am getting. In better weather I drive in the Normal mode and I find the car is as responsive as it needs to be for average routine driving. In the winter and colder days I sometimes switch to Eco mode for slightly better consumption but I also find Eco mode gives the car a sluggish drive experience.
Yep, I was averaging around 41 for quite a while on my 2023 Ultra Luxury now I'm averaging around 37 MPG for some crazy reason. I have had the oil & filter changed four times with 15,400 miles on the clock. No major issues just hot summer city/hwy driving I guess.
I cannot seem to get better than 39 MPG...usuallyit hovers around 37-38. I have tried resetting the gauge, so as maybe to start the mileage out “fresh” but it doesn't seem to make a difference. Drive it mostly in ECO which does help a bit.

You'll get the best MPG around 35-55mph, summer blend gas, and weather nice enough that you're not blasting the AC. I can easily go anywhere between 36mpg and 44mpg depending on those variables.

I have to disagree with the summer blend statement - they dilute it with methanol so it has less energy output.
We've had a heatwave on and off the last 3 weeks here and even with remote start to cool down the car for at least 5 minutes before driving, I'm still getting an average of 42.4mpg, very impressive. 2022 F sport trim, cold air tire pressure is at 37psi with the AC running at 68F and cooled seats working too.
Yep, I have to agree, I forgot about the reformulated gasoline for the Gulf Coast. I live in an area (Houston) that gets the special blends to reduce air pollution, which in the summer, reduces gas mileage IMO.
Special Gasoline Blends (Reformulated Gasoline) reduce emissions and improve air quality; however, they complicate supply and contribute to higher prices
I purchased my '22 ESh at 8k miles. Now at 78k. After nearly two years, MPG has been consistent but fluctuated with season. Fall and spring I average 49-50 mpg pretty easily. Utah winter and the peak of summer drops it down to about 46-47 mpg.
I drive rather conservatively and have lightweight wheels which probably helps. 5K oil changes on Valvoline Platinum 0W-16 and alternating a can of Seafoam and Berryman's B12 every month or so.
