Default Fuel Consumption meter on 08 RX400h

First, I apologize for what I imagine is a dumb question. I am not very knowledgeable about auto mechanics, much less hybrids. I'm a woman, not that that should matter, lol. I'm trying to understand what the displays on the dash mean, specifically the fuel consumption meter. Intuitively, the bar would be farther to the left when fuel consumption is higher, but the scale is mpg, and from driving for a few days, the bar moves to the right, when my foot is off the gas or I'm braking, so it would seem that when the bar is farthest to the right, the fuel efficiency is the highest. (i.e. the gauge is measuring fuel efficiency based on mpg - right?) The average MPG is going up, which supports that interpretation.

Am I interpreting this correctly? [I'm not even blond!]
