Default Rack and Pinion Steering

2010 HS250h premium. 97000 miles.

Last year, I had the nightmare Brake Booster Pump problem. Lucked out and got reimbursed by Lexus a month later. Now, after hearing a clunking sound in my steering column and near front wheel, I have to replace rack and pinion steering, tie rods, and steering shaft. $$$$.

I have never in my life ever had the rack and pinion replaced in any car I have ever owned. Has anybody else had this issue with their HS250h? I'm seriously thinking of getting rid of this car within the next year. This has me worried.

Happy holidays!

My vehicle, which is a 2010 with 111,000 miles on the odometer also has looseness/play in the steering rack as well. According my local Toyota Dealer, this issue with the rack, while not common, does seem to be concentrated with Toyota Prius Generation 2 vehicles and their cousins like the HS250h. Out of curiosity, what did the steering rack replacement cost you? My local Toyota Dealer charges $1600 USD for the rack replacement. Another thing to nose is that the HS250h steering racks are starting to get scarce. As spares are being expended, no new racks are being manufactured at this point.

I didn't go to the Lexus dealer. They kinda screwed up my brake booster pump install and then gaslighted me about it. I went to a mechanic highly recommended by a family member. Rack and pinion steering is going to be around $850 (getting part from Lexus), plus tie rods, and labor. Gonna cost me $2400. I'm in southern California, so labor might be higher than in Washington. I have another family member in northern California who is a mechanic and he said $2400 seemed about right.

I'm getting the work done. But, man, what a punch in the gut right after Christmas!

460Prado - that looks like a Lexus LX and you posted in the forum for the HS250h, which is a small hybrid sedan! There are no common parts.
