Have a 2018 GX bought new with the remote control app service for a year that we didnt use much so we stopped paying for it. anyhow the sales rep never showed us the fob method of remote start, and im just now finding out about it. Remote start with the app would always work but I can never get it to work using the fob... the instructions I found say to: 2 presses on the fob's lock button within 2 secs and then for the 3rd press hold down for 3 secs. I do get the blinky lights for presses 1 and 2 like the instructions say but nothing happens at all on the 3rd press after even 10 seconds.
Is this something that only works if you still pay the yearly fee or what?
Do you have low fuel? It won’t work if you have 1/4 tank or so. It also won’t work if certain warning lights are illuminated in the instrument cluster.
its got almost 1/2 a tank of gas, no errors/warnings/info indicators on or maintenance required, its all healthy! so it seems that by reading those 2 links there that im just screwed with the 2018 GX on keyfob remote start unless you also have the subscription?
it boggles the mind they require the subscription to use the fob remote start feature. its not internet based at all. i was seriously pissed off shortly after purchase when my daughter reported there was no USB charger ports in the middle or rear seats. and now this? this was my first ever toyota/lexus will never do that again.
too bad cause you guys here are great. thanks for the assistance!

I have a 2010 so mine isn’t tied to a subscription. I think that’s your answer. What a crock Toyota did this.
All 2010 through 2017 Lexus models and only the 2018 GX are set up with the 3G telematic connection
that will be sunset next Halloween 10/31/2022 which will end the Safety Connect and Lexus App w/RS.
Lexus and other OEM's have published position statements stating that there will be no upgrades or
components offered to connect to the 5G networks currently in use.
My 2017 GX remote start is working just fine with the key fob. 2 presses on the fob's lock button within 2 secs and then for the 3rd press hold down for 3 secs.

my remote start works good if I’m within 20 feet of my truck, it’s a known deficiency but wish there was something to improve the factory remote start range.
ChrisPh does apparently have and other 2010 - 2017 Lexi can have the Lexus Engine Start (RES)
component installed which enables the fob three press cadence to work forever without a subscription.
Was a $500 one time charge for Port or Dealer installed RES. Was also a $1000 RES+ (plus) system
that added a phone app with subscription but that connection sunset a year ago.
RES+ will still work as the RES fob starter with out any ongoing fees.
I thought I had a similar problem as the OP. Two presses and 3 second hold on the 3rd press of the lock button did nothing, even after a few tries (have an active subscription). Remote app on phone worked just fine however. For me I ended up needing to hold the lock button for about 10 seconds. For future reference, press the lock button twice and hold the 3rd until it starts. Hopefully this helps.
Just get one from 12volt.solutions and skip the rest of this drama. I have one in my '15 and it works great. I added the app module, too, and love it.
Got mine in yesterday with the app module. Took me 10 minutes to install and worked right off the bat. Now that I see there are Aux options in the app, I'm going to reach out to 12VS and find out how I can go about using those for lights and such. Would be great to be able to turn on my future truck surround floods with the app.
Reading through this thread, it appears there's some question whether certain versions of these vehicles even have remote start from the fob or not. Does anyone have a definitive answer? I just picked up a 2019 base model GX460 and the fob remote start works in a HIGHLY intermittent manner. I'm assuming if it worked ONCE, then the function does exist. But with the idea that Toyota is trying to sell an upgraded service, I wouldn't put it out of the realm of possibility that they'd program the fob functionality to be deliberately crappy. I mean, we've all seen how our phones suddenly start experiencing weird problems coincidentally the moment after we refuse an update...

The pressing of the Lock button on the FOB has to be perfect. A little too long or too long of a time between presses. And it won’t work
