Default First "Overland" Trip

Got the GX out in her natural habitat this memorial day weekend and was beyond impressed. Covered 134 miles of northern AZ and had a blast doing it. Camped over night about halfway through the trail and enjoyed the much much cooler temps than we have here in the Phoenix valley. I am excited to keep exploring in the GX and look forward to future upgrades, most likely starting with suspension.

Had about 8 miles of winding pavement so I decided to air back up after having lunch in Jerome.

Decided to go North to South just because I live in Phoenix which made it a quick drive home but would definitely like to try it South to North as well.

Beautiful. We just bought a '17 GX460 in white 2 weeks ago, and I have been working on my wife to let me make a couple of minor modifications to get our family into some mild overlanding. Being cooped up during COVID has really made me appreciate the idea of getting out into nature with the kids more.
You're trip looks like just the right starting point.
A few questions about how your rig did:
What tires are you running?
Are you running the stock suspension? Do you have the air suspension or standard fixed height? Any rubbing with those tires?
Did you have any issues with approach/departure angles? My biggest concern about getting out onto the trails is the fear of running the nose into a rock. I don't want to put a crazy aggressive front bumper on it since my wife will be driving around town in it a lot, but it seems like a bit of an Achilles heal.

those appear to be the Falken Wildpeak AT3s. I just put a set on my old 3rd gen 4Runner and love them. Considering putting them on the wife's GX too.

that picture of the rear of the GX explains what we all experience with the liftgate never staying clean. if i get a car wash, it's dirty by the time i get home.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw the rear picture except I don't have a liftgate on my GX. Must be nice...

That would be correct. Those are 265/70/18 Falken Wildpeaks. I did the very common mod on the infamous bolt to keep it from rubbing while the wheels were out getting powder coated so I have never had any rubbing issues. Air these bad boys down to 25 psi and they are awesome off road. I have a Premium model so just the normal fixed suspension and its been just fine for now. The front nose hasn't been an issue actually, its more the side steps and the rear than anything. This is the wife's daily as well so I wont be doing any bumpers, I'll just eventually go with a 2" inch lift either from Dobins or Icon.

@JonGX The app is called Gaia GPS. Its a great app that has a zillion different features. You can pay for the full version but for my needs, I am sticking with the free version. I actually found this trail route on another website and just retraced it in Gaia so I could track all the stats. Works of GPS as well obviously so it doesn't matter if you have service or not.

We owned a GX before this one - the struggle is real.

Thanks CaptRog21 - That's super helpful. Glad to know approach hasn't been too much of an issue. It sounds like we're in very similar boats!

hi,

I just modified my 14 GX 460 and started overlanding on it. I installed 3” Old Man Emu medium lift on it. New wheels and Nitto tires ( obviously larger ) and Prinsu roof rack. did amazing!
I would love to discuss, share and learn from everyone’s experiences.

That is a great lookin rig! I just received my Ironman 4x4 FCP stage 2 lift kit that I will be installing in the next couple weeks, which I am very excited about. I have also been trying to convince my wife to let me throw the Prinsu rack on it as well. How have you liked it so far? I know its still pretty new to you but any complaints?

I have really liked it. My wife and I installed it, very simple. No wind noise at all. I almost went with the suspension you are getting, good choice. I also removed 3rd row and built a slider for my cooler. Tinted front windows too. I am currently working on adding power outlets to the back. Included another pic of roof rack, hopefully it will help with the convincing.

^^Looks great! Tint really finishes it off. Would definitely remove the third row seats when I buy mine.

2014 seems shorter/more sleek to me...
