I wanted to put together a list of things one should check before the powertrain warranty expires. Your input is greatly appreciated. So far I have the below:

While we are on the topic of powertrain warranty, I had the left rear axle seal replaced under warranty because it was leaking (seems like I am the only one that had that problem though). If anyone does need to get an axle seal replaced, know that the axle seal itself is not covered under powertrain warranty, but the dealer was able to blame the wheel bearing and cover it under warranty that way (thank you Lexus of Tulsa!).

What else do you think needs to be checked before the powertrain warranty expires?

 

Timing chain cover oil leak.

 

Overall ....even getting on the ground with a flashlight and just looking for any kind of leakage from front to back. One doesn't even need to jack up rig in any way for this. Your wallet may thank you for the extra load of dirty clothes from being on the ground. Look through the fender wells too.

I still need to pop my spark plug cables/coils out to verify issue listed above.

Definitely check for timing cover leaks. I had that at about 65k miles on my 2012. They replaced the water pump while in there because it was leaking a little bit too..

 

Still keeping a keen eye on my timing covers. I thought one was starting to weep but dry so far. Water pump was definitely in need of replacement as it looked like a cotton candy machine down there.

 

Where can I see for a leaky water pump.

 

Basically the middle front of engine. If you see any pink residue around any of the pulleys. Mine got to point where there were pink stains showing up on button of my skid plates on the front button.

Has this oil in the plug well issues caused any fouled coil packs that anyone knows of? Is the fix for this a new type of gasket dissimilar from the old one or are they just replacing this gasket with the same part/quality as the old one?

 

I don't remember seeing anything even on Tundra forums. Not sure on the gasket question. We'd have to see if part # has been superseded.

seat cooling is worthless.
my previous 2016 gx premium made slight thumping noise near the drive shaft while accelerating from standstill...master tech said it was fine.
if you're a hard braker you will prematurely warp the front rotors fairly easily.

My guess is that the 2018 will have most of the known issues corrected. But some of the earlier trucks have had problems with the secondary air pump and valves, so much so that Toyota extended the warranty on them. I've heard of some issues where the truck has a lean to one side or the other (but this seems common with the Toyota small truck platforms). An issue that I've had (as well as the secondary air pump) is an oil leak from the timing cover and an oil leak from the valve cover gasket. I've seen a few reports from others as well with oil leaks. Again I hope that they've resolved the issues for 2018.
