I couldn't find any actual used oil analysis reports for the GX460 in this forum. I had mine checked for the last batch and wasn't that pleased with the numbers and feedback.

At 10000 miles on the oil, and 40000 miles on the GX, it shows high metal counts for aluminum, copper and iron. I'm well past break in on the GX, so it's a bit of a cause for concern in my mind. Since there isn't much data on GX's, I Googled around for other Toyota 0w-20 UOA's, and found some 4Runners and FJCruisers that had similar high numbers in some of these areas, but often with a newer engine (<20k miles). Maybe it's a coincidence, or maybe this is common and Ok for these newer Toyota engines, or maybe I'm overthinking things. But I'm likely going to take the lab tech's suggestion and reduce my oil interval to 7500 and see if the metals improve.

Anyway - If anyone else has done a Blackstone UOA on their GX, post up the report here for comparison.

 

are u hard on the gas pedal? are you the original owner? If so, did you follow the normal break in procedure up until 1000 miles?

 

I would try another brand of oil and filter! I always run Amsoil 0W-30 and their oil filter (1-year oil changes) and have had great numbers on my 08 GX with 80K. I know you have a completely different engine, but try another oil to see if the wear goes down any.
I would say if you cannot find amsoil go with Mobil 1 Extended synthetic and their filter too.

 

If these are expressed in parts per million, and say the metal wear rate was a steady constant per mile driven, lowering the change interval would certainly decrease the numbers each interval. But does that actually mean the engine is wearing out faster than "normal"?

 

I wouldnt worry. We know this truck built to last long time. However, I dont see the reason why should have oil changed every 10K miles. Mine was done @ 5K miles.

 

There is no unusual history with my GX, no erratic driving or break in activities, or another abnormal. But I don't have an earlier UOA to benchmark against, so this is my baseline.

The higher presence of metals might indicate that the oil is no longer lubricating adequately, and the resulting metal to metal friction is causing the higher numbers. Toyota says the synthetic 0w-20 is a 10k mile interval, but I don't like to see these higher wear numbers. I'm going to cut down the next oil change to around 7k and see what Blackstone reports back. This Toyota oil is about half as expensive as what the German Castrol that Audi requires costs, so I'm Ok with reducing the intervals a bit if necessary.

 

Here's a new report for my GX. This interval was around 7200 miles, and the data shows improvements across the board on metals. I'd like to push the interval a bit higher next time to see how much of the previous 10k mile report may have been an anomaly, but I'm pretty comfortable settling in at around 7500 mile intervals - certainly as the engine ages I'll trend in that direction.

 

Sorry to kick this back up but did you have it recheck again at a different interval?
are you changing it at 7500 now? I'm thinking staying at around 7500 miles as well even wirh my wife's Camry.

 

I'm gonna use Amsoil 0W-20 this first oil change but considering using the high moly 0W-20 Mazda oil I use in my CX-5 next time.

I thought Amsoil has moly in their oil. Is it not as high as the Mazda oil? How high is the moly in it? Cheaper than amsoil?

It used to be so simple back in the days, 4 quarts of 10w-40 every 6 months and call it a day lol haha 😂

 

I'm glad you did bump the thread. My intention was to make this a rolling, interactive thread so others could share their experiences.

I've got an oil change coming up soon at 60k which will be around 7500 from my last change. I may let it go a bit longer just to see the data, but like you my longer term plan is to just stick with 7500 mile changes. It's kind of a pain to change the oil on the GX with all the skid plates, but I don't mind doing it a bit more often given what the data indicates for the 10k change.

 

I'm gonna have to get back to you on number but Blackstone tests on the Mazda oil usually comes out extremely high on the moly. I think it is actually made by Idemitsu which has their own version which is also high.

It is fairly spendy at over $9/quart. I've been able to get at my local Mazda dealer for around $8/quart.


I do have an Amsoil membership so bought this for $6.30/quart... I think it is around $9.00 without membership.

Also gonna add this Fumoto valve at next oil change.

 

Thanks for sharing the results of the analysis. This sort of reinforces my thought process that even though the oil may be rated to 10k, it might be worth discussing changing it out sooner for additional peace of mind.

I've been chided by the stealer for getting oil changes at 5k intervals (we do 90% harsh stop and go city traffic).

 

I notice that the oil comes out pretty black, and goes in pretty clear when I do a change.

Just put in some Mobil 0w-20 AFE.

 

I am not going to do a UOA this next oil change but I will on the next one. Easier and cleaner to obtain sample with the Fumoto valve.
