I was combing through 1UR-FE UOAs on BITOG, and it does appear 5W-30 usually produces a tangibly lower Fe and Al (per mile) than 0W-20.

Yup, I am going to give the 5W-30 M1 Truck and SUV a whirl on this next oil change. Several versions of M1 5w30 have protected both of my 100 series land cruisers 2UZ-FE's for a combined 525,000 + miles.

Picking up another GX soon, so this baseline on will go into that one as well. I ran analysis on the 4runner using the Toyota M1 oil and it was pretty good in that engine. It lives away from my "garage" so I'm comfortable with that oil as well.

Yeah, I'm in the South (Arkansas) so though we do see a freezing temperature once in a while, most of the year it's just hot.

This link shows different oil recommendations for different regions/years for the 1UR. Upon further investigation, not all 5w30 synthetic is alike. Euro spec Mobil 1 5w30 has higher viscosity. AI says Euro spec synthetics use group 3/4 PAO base stocks (higher viscosity/quality) for more uniform viscosity vs. temperature. This leads me to thinking M1 5w30 Euro spec is the way to go? For my '03 LX470 (2UZ) and '05 LS430 (3UZ), I have been using M1 0w40 Euro spec since I've owned them (2006/2009), and both engines are running like a champ at 220K mi. Same Toyota club link lists 5w30, 10w30, 15w40, 20w50 has recommended grades, the latter high viscosity grades no doubt for Australia/Africa/Middle East. The 0w40 has a higher viscosity and high TBN (much higher than normal M1 5w30)

Personally, at 5k/6months any 0w30/5w30 will do.

I am from northeast, my 2015 gx has 160k miles, I have always used 0w-20, if I were to switch to 5w-30 starting next spring/summer, would this have any issues with its 1ur fe emgine (bearing clearance etc).

My all time avg fuel economy is like 19.1mpg, I don't tow or do any off-road, most miles are on highway. So I don't really care about any drop of mpg, I do care about engine longevity.

Thank you and happy Thanksgiving!

Clearances are the spaces between parts, tolerances are the allowed amount of variation from the spec'd clearance. Mass produced automotive engines generally all have pretty similar clearances, regardless of grade spec'd. Where things change is when we get down to thinner oil grades like 0W-20, 0W-12, and 0W-8 where the MOFT just isn't there with these ultra thin oils, so the solution is to increase the bearing width, to increase its load carrying capacity and provide a larger film over which the load is spread. This increases friction of course, but apparently the increase in friction here is less than the overall savings by going with the thinner oil when looked at as a whole. This was heavily experimented with in Japan long before it made its way to North America.

So after reading all that whats the take away? You are absolutely fine running a thicker oil, as long as that oil falls into the manuals attached above in the anticipated ambient temperatures.

If you want it even simpler about running a more protective oil, just use 0w30 or 0w40 in areas where it can snow, or if its above freezing run 5w30 or 5w40.

Lastly any oil thats been tested and recommended in any 1URFE manual oil is fine. The most important thing though is regular oci paired to duty cycles.

Latest using M1 5W30 Truck and SUV. I feel like the iron is a little high.

I'd give it one more try before drawing a conclusion

I did.

Put 0W20 ESP in our 23 that has generally short trips (3.6 miles) one way and will sample at 4/6/10 months to see how the ESP does.

My daily in the 22 is about 6 miles one way. But during oct - Jan it makes frequent 2-400 mile trips.
