I keep one of these in my garage, even take one with me on long trips. If you catch it soon enough, using one of these repair kits will keep a crack from growing. Plus, if you do it right, you can make a star all but disappear.
I think it varies from state-to-state. In Washington state, where I live it is based on whatever your insurance comprehensive deductible is at. They will waive deductible for repairable rock chips though.
Any future windshield replacements I will order parts beforehand as well.
My installer didn't put in a new rain pad but told me if auto wipers don't work right to let him know and he will put in a new pad. I really haven't a chance to test as rainy Seattle area hasn't had any measurable rain for over 57 days now.
