Default 2014 Engine knock when cold

Ok guys, I finally made a recording (attached), it isn't the greatest quality sorry. I would suggest listening to it with headphones if possible. The noise I'm referring to is featured between the 0:28 and 1:00 marks. You can hear it again from about 1:10 to 1:25.

Just to recap:

2014 GX Premium pkg.
4400 miles
93 Octane always

The sequence of events is such:

1- Car is parked overnight in garage, air temperature is 60 degrees or less
2- Start car, pull out of garage
3- Put car in D
4- Drive to stop sign at end of street
5- The transmission downshifts and engine revs slightly as the car comes to a stop
6- After sitting at the stop for a few seconds, foot on brake, engine at idle, it starts to make that thumping/clunk noise
7- Noise stops once I start moving again, and does not come back once the engine is warmed up

Note: This happens whenever the temperature is 60 degrees or below and the engine is cold/car has been sitting overnight. All accessory systems were shut off for this recording/demonstration (no A/C or heat running, no radio or other accessories on).

Not sure if this is knock, piston slap, or something else? Anyone experience anything similar??

It's just a voice memo recording I made with my iPhone. I don't have a youtube account, I don't really want to create one just for this.

Anyway, what's going on with yours? Why have they had it for two weeks without figuring out the issue? Does it do it all the time?

Either this is a problem or it isn't. There are lots of posts on Tundra forums about the 5.7L, but not about the 4.6L. The 5.7L guys seem to be of the consensus that this is normal for this engine family, but I'm worried about long-term consequences. If this noise is indicative of something going on in the engine that is do "minuscule" damage over the course of 10 or 15 years and 150,000 miles, well, I don't want to be looking at a new engine in that timeframe. This is a freaking $60k Lexus, I expect it to perform better than a 1987 Dodge.

I have my 5000 mile service coming up, but I'm scared they will not be able to reproduce the issue and diagnose the motor with the warmer weather on the way.

Interesting.... I know it's a completely different engine, but several 2013+ Toyota Tacoma's have been having similar issues under 5000 miles. The vehicle is made in the U.S. and Mexico, but I believe the engine is still made in Japan.

There's a guy on the Tacoma World forum that has taken his truck to the dealership several times for it. Now his Toyota regional office is looking into the issue. Here is the thread: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd...-may-shot.html Maybe it's something in the 4.0 and 4.6 that was recently changed since previous years in the same generation? Different distributor for engine parts?

Here's a direct link to the Tacoma owner's engine noise. I think they may be similar SecPole

I have a 2012 taco v6 and it sounds similar like that when cold. Timing chain issues? Not enough lube when it's still cold?

Interesting, thanks for the links.

Similar, but not exactly. And it looks like that video was made from outside the vehicle.

My noise is not discernible outside of the vehicle, oddly.

how could that be? if youre engine is knocking, you should hear it outside also.
i would invoke the lemon law if you arent happy with the gx.
your issues with the gx are outside the norm of owners here.
explain to lexus you arent happy. they may take vehicle from you and replace it.
lexus should bend over to fix these issues

I dropped the GX at the dealership Friday afternoon, it's Monday afternoon now.
Just got a call from the adviser:....

-The issue I've been having with the NAV randomly rebooting is supposedly fixed by a firmware update which they applied.

-They are having trouble replicating the engine noise (no surprise), and say that the vehicle is running normally and no usual wear or issues are present.

-I had them do an oil change/10k service even though the truck only has 5k miles on it now.

My only comfort is that it does have a long powertrain warranty. If there is something going wrong with that engine, it will present itself by the time the warranty runs out.

The gave me a brand-new 2014 ES350 loaner. It drives a lot like an Altima rental I had a few years back. That is not a compliment. $45k for that car...Not impressive.

off topic. does your brake pedal also makes a sound when you step on it? I could hear it at 0:26/27

Did you ask the dealer to test the SUV with transmission ENGAGED? If you leave the tx in N or P the RPM is running higher and you might NOT hear the "knocking".

May the RPM is too LOW?
