Passenger mirror folds forward after smacking garage entrance
On backing out a month ago, I whacked the passenger mirror on my 17 GX.
It's OK, me and my wife have only whacked mirrors on every car we own and I've had to replace or repair them at minimum four times, including this one.
If only builders could save another $500 making garages even narrower, that would make the homes cheaper to buy...
Anyway, I did not break any visible part of the mirror except the LED turn signal lens, which I replaced successfully following that scoundrel GX Bob's video. But my mirror folds FORWARD fully now every time I start the car, no matter what position the control switch is in. Correctly adjusting it manually from the driver's seat has become... tiresome.
Any way to fix this or is some internal gearing mechanism broken? I can remove a door panel faster than any car stereo installation team, due to the many hundreds of times I've had to perform this task, so replacing a mirror won't be much of a trial... Is there any way to reset the gears set or actuators to prevent the fold-forward problem? Frankly, I'm ready to just bracket it in place and call it good, which would save me $500+.

I have the same issue. Did you ever find a solution to this? It's looking like you have to order the entire motor bracket. I have the mirror apart but do not see how you can access the internals of the motor. I was hoping it had just jumped a cam gear that I could just reset. The mirror auto extends all the way out upon start up. Thinking of just disconnecting the motor and moving on.

Wish I’d read the last post, although I tried to correct it using your technique without success.
i created an “L” bracket with a rubber stop on the flattened head of an adjustable screw and screwed the backer to the non-moving lower housing of the mirror. It’s hard to see and painted black, and is also $800 cheaper than the appropriate solution.

Yeah, tried your suggestion right off the bat doesn't work. The mirror will fold itself all the way outward upon start up. The driver's mirror doesn't move. The mirrors should not move at all upon start up. Something is causing the passenger mirror motor to activate and twist the mirror all the way around so that it is facing outward away from the car. I have had the mirror apart, the gearing is inside the motor and it's not just that the gear is broken the mirror thinks it needs to fold itself out.
You went further than I did - I didn’t think that I would be able to repair the reset or gear without just acquiring a new mirror, so I played my “L-Bracket-card” and the plan worked perfectly.
When I get back to the truck this afternoon I’ll shoot a pic and post it here. Yea, I know this isn’t the right way to fix the problem but it’s saving me enough to buy two cases of ammo or a new rifle or at least the cost of a half-decent optic.

just wanted to add this bit in case someone else runs into the same issue. The mirror will fold all the way in with the switch like it is suppose to operate. When you activate the switch to fold them back out it will not stop where it is suppose to stop like the driver's side. So it may not even be that the gear is stripped, maybe the little mother board in the mirror is bad. Although the mirror is so loose now that if you manually set it in the right place it gets blown in towards the window at highway speed.
It seems like all the stop detents are inside the motor.

Were you able to fix this? I have the same issue with my drivers side mirror. Nothing looks broken, but it extends forward when I start the car. If I hold it and prevent it from moving I hear what sounds like gears clicking and occasionally this will prevent it from moving when it start the car the next time, but it never lasts.
