3rd Gen impact to 2nd Gen
Hi everyone,
What's everyone's opinions on how the release of the 3rd gen will do to the price of the 2nd gen? I realize there will be some impact but how severe?
I was looking at the LX and it seems like the price on the previous generation has held up pretty well even after the new generation was released. At the same time I realize there are far fewer LX's out there relative to GX's.
Reason I ask is because I just purchased a '23 but read a few threads here and on Reddit where people believe the price will halve up the release of the '24. I spoke to a dealer about what I could get on my trade-in toward maybe a '21 LX with 20k miles if I wanted to and at present time, the $ value lost would be minimal vs. (from what it sounds like) could happen in the future.
Much appreciated!

Halve ? ... that is absolute drama. Lots of real information out there ... the GX470 to GX460 change-over ... the multi generational 4-Runner change-over.
Demand has always maintained given the relatively limited production numbers ... plus a naturally aspirated V8 will be sought after given it is a simple, proven and bulletproof in comparison to a V6 twin-turbo.
Beyond that ... why are you worried about depreciation ... you just bought the thing ... with the GX (and 4-Runner) depreciation for all generations being close to the best in the industry.

I can tell you that I am far more interested in a GX550 than I am in the GX460. Its capability and size are much more appealing to me as someone who uses the vehicle for a wide range of purposes(offroading, towing and daily driving/soccer mom/grocery getting.) The twin turbo V6 is a big deal for me and will trade in the V8 in a heart beat given the opportunity. I've owned and towed with an F150 3.5L Ecoboost for 9 years now and its not contest for me. The TTV6 is the superior motor in almost every way.
That said, I dont think it will cause the GX460 to cut in half or anywhere close to it because 99% of the owners dont use it for anything but starbucks trips.

Real world the TTV6 is better in almost every way. The only two major draw backs are the crappy sound and the alledgedly lower reliability. Even if i had to do major repairs to the Toyota TTV6 every 100k I wouldn’t care. I’d trade the V8 for it.
I dont base my entire automotive purchases on reliability.

Exactly! It's pretty common knowledge that twin turbo setups shorten engine and plastic connector life due to heat. I'll take an old but proven V8 platform over some potential grenade or electrical gremlin due to plastic degradation due to excessive heat from these types of engines. (*see BMW & Audi).
I think the added complexity and questions over longevity and reliability will actually steer some buyers towards a used GX w/ a V8 and over a decade of proven tech. Same goes for the LX. The only reason I could see people wanting the new GX would be a substantial increase in fuel economy, but that didn't happen.
Coming from the GX470 to the GX460 there are a few things I think they really got wrong with the interior functions, and it will be interesting to see what they improved or messed up on the latest version.
Toyota owners a bit of a different breed then most, as the things that are important to them aren't always the latest and greatest, yada yada yada.

The GX is one of the most tested vehicles in the world…around the world. The Prado has been used in every condition all over the globe. If you think a twin turbo will be more reliable than a V8…..I’ve been towing with a GX for literally 10 years without a single issue, and I don’t just tow to a local boat ramp. I tow from Destin, Fl down to Big Pine Key almost monthly now. Sure, the extra torque could come into play with the new generation, but for just a single better MPG and decreased reliability (IMO) I’m willing to keep on enjoying my new 23 and wait until the jury returns on the new gen. I like the newer look and the better wheel articulation, but not enough to jump on the bandwagon just because it’s new. Time will tell…
