Default Annual repair/maintenance costs?

Does anyone here keep track of their repair and maintenance costs? I was wondering if anyone has any idea of what repair/maintenance costs to expect on this vehicle per year. Specifically I've been considering purchasing a 2006 or 2007 but would be interested in data from earlier MY as well. My daily driver is a 2001 X5 and I just calculated that I've been spending about $5-6K / year in repairs and maintenance. It makes me jealous when I hear from Lexus owners that all they do is change the oil and an occasional battery. Thanks.

Hi, I have 2007 with 82k miles on it. I had it for a year and all I did is oil change, it cost me $70 (6 and 1/2 1 liter bottles) + I had my own oil filter (OEM). Oil I use is Mobile1 10W-30. Good Luck.

5 to 6k a year is steep! I have had a 2004 for a few months and have had a $42 oil change (at Lexus). I just got the 90k mile maintenance quote, and it is going to be around $1300. Considering it's the last major service for a while and includes the timing belt and water pump, it's not that bad.

I change my own bulbs and filters, as well as any other minor repairs. I can do the timing belt, but I'd rather play some golf. I also changed some of the front speakers because they were blown when I got the truck.

Sorry to hear about spending that much money on your bmw...back in Dec '07 I bought my '03 GX470 with 63k miles...fortunately during my ownership I have only had to pay for oil changes and 1 car battery replacement a couple of months ago. other than that the GX has been a tank....great vehicle and would definitely recommend.

Thanks for the replies. That is what I figured and why I'm switching to Lexus. I can't believe I've been spending so much the past 7 years. I could have bought a new car for what I've spent on BMW repairs. I have sold the X5 and my Black/Tan 2007 GX on it's way. Will be taking delivery this Saturday! Can't wait.

I agree in the reliability of a Lexus, But still hope you will purchase an extended warranty of some sort. For $2500 you could get a 4yr/60k warranty. I used Peoples choice, and although its ok, they somewhat dictate that you use aftermarket parts. Which means I go to a regular mechanics bay and not the Lexus dealership. They covered me for 2 calipers- but aftermarket. I learned the hard way after dropping my GX off at a Lexus dealership. You could use Lexus parts but would have to make up the difference- which is like double. Good luck

For some reason I had bad luck with X5 too, I had X5 4.6is very nice car. But maintaince were killing me such as: seat belt buckle, water pump, radiator, tailights, O2 sensors, ABS sensors, check engine light, even fuel pump.

I'm going to chime in here with the other GX owners and say $5K to $6K for your X5??? OUCH!!

I've done my own oil change so far, cabin filter replacement, air filter replacement, and that's it. I've not had to do anything special to the GX to keep it going. Oil change was probably less than $40, the majority of the cost being the Mobil 1 Synthetic.

Will be doing the transfer case and differential oil on my own, but that's going to be under $100 to take care of myself. Again, using Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Oil.

All this is after 2 years of ownership.

That's an awful lot of money to be spending on yearly maintenance. What was your average mileage on the vehicle?

Own my GX for 4 yrs and it has about 37K miles. (I live on an Island.) The only maintenance was oil changes every 6mths +-. Cost about $120. Kinda of expensive but I believe my time is worth more than DIY maintenance (translation: lazy). The only other non-mainteance I had to do, which was done free under the warranty, was replacing the battery at 3yrs 10mths.

Now that the warranty is over, I hoping the vehicle doesn't start to fall apart. I do expect to have to replace the tires within a year or two.

Yes... way too much. I was only driving it about 12k miles/year. I'm happy to have gotten rid of it!

Yes! Two days after my X5 sold I found a clean 07 GX470. It's a loaded Black/Tan. I took it in for a check-up/service at Lexus last Friday and also did the XM radio upgrade. The ride is amazing, maybe not as sporty as the X5 but better than the spine shaking stiff ride of the X5... grown very tired of that. The Lexus drivetrain and suspension are smooth as silk. Thanks for the input everyone!

Hey, good deal, welcome to the family! I've heard that the X5 is a rough ride, and your inputs help to validate those comments I've heard before. Hope you enjoy the GX and stick around the forums!

I purchased my 04 GX470 back in 2008 with 58k. After 30k miles, most of the maintenance I did has been oil change which I do myself with Mobile1 W5-30 (6.5 Qt) + oil filter.

Oh, I also replaced rear side brake pads which cost me about $60

My front side brake pads are due now but couldn't do it myself so far (I'll need to get some help from this form )

Good luck
