can someone advise on the key requirements for 30k service. Dealer asking for $1000 for whole bunch of stuff that is not necessary.....I will get the list but I am sure most of it is not necessary -- appreciate any feedback - thanks

The owner's manual has everything you need to do. But off the top of my head: oil & filter change, rotate tires, cabin and engine air filters, flush brake fluid, lube drive shaft, retorque drive shaft bolts. If you tow or go off road, replace front/rear diff oil and transfer case oil. That's it. There's not much to do.

You should do the cabin and engine air filter yourself - it only costs about $10each online and simple enough -do a search on here or one of the 4runner forums on how to do it. If you want to let the dealer do the rest of the stuff, I'd say it's only about $250 ($150 for the brake flush/fluids and $100 for the oil change and tire rotation - I think they should lube the drive shaft as part of the oil change. If they don't, complain that there's a clunk, and they should lube it for free). Diff fluid and transfer case may be about $300-400, not sure about that though.

I checked with 3 local dealers in Socal and got quotes from $650-$750 for all the must haves not including differential and transfer case oil change. This seemed a bit ridiculous to me given that it's basically Oil Change and Brake Fluid plus some additional inspection.

I'm taking the GX to a local shop that I've used before and they'll be doing everything listed above plus the Diff and Transfer case for about $250. I'm bringing my own fluids... Pennzoil Platinum for the motor and Amsoil Severe Gear for the Differential and Transfer Case. After reading up on the forums I decided on the "optional - towing only" gear chance just to be proactive.
