Hey guys. I'm considering buying a 1st gen GX470. I've been on the hunt for a few weeks and have come across a few prospects. Most of the ones in my price range have between 110k-130k miles. Any tips or warnings before I jump in? Thanks in advance.

Yes, there's a lot you need to look into before you make the purchase with a car that many miles.
1- Was the timing belt and water pump replaced recently? If so is there proof? If not then that's something you will need to do ASAP and it's costly.
2- Any sagging in the rear? Bumpy ride? That could mean that the rear air bags or the compressor is shot and needs to be replaced. $$$$$
3- Look for tears around the CV boots.
4- Look for coolant (and all other fluid) leaks under the car. The radiators on these cars are prone to leaking.
5- other basic things such as brake & rotor check, tires, accident report etc

With a car with 100K miles be aware that you're gonna have to do a full tune-up soon such as new plugs, transmission flush, transfer case and differential gear oil change, filters, serpentine belt, etc. You can use all of that are a bargaining chip.

Thanks again Deeken. This information was very helpful. I have found one with 106k miles, new waterpump/timing belt, differential oil change, fuel system cleaned, regularly maintained. I will still have a full inspection at Lexus before closing the deal. Crossing fingers

Also watch for seized front brake calipers, very common on GX470's and 4th gen 4Runners.

'03 was the only year with a trans dipstick, which some people like.
'05+ got the vvti engine with a bump in power, but also a smog pump that can fail, and a recommendation to use premium fuel (lots run regular).
If you have dreams of updating the stereo, look for a non-nav truck.

Incase you didn't already know a GX470 is mechanically the same as a 4th gen 4Runner V8 LTD. trim, right down to the airbag rear suspension (on the LTD trim only).

Funny, I recently passed on one that had bad brake calibers. The one I have my eyes on right now is a 2007. It looks like the 2004-2006 models have slightly better reviews than the 2007. Any specific cons with the 2007? I am more than happy with the Mark Levinson sound system but may want to add a DVD system in the back at some point.
