Hello all...when I'm close to empty and I start my gx sometimes the gas gauge reads empty but the digital might read 50plus miles??

 

Neither the gauge or computed miles to empty are precise measurements. Learn to live with the readings you get. Every GX will be slightly different. Best to always fill up before nearing the empty mark. If you want to do a test, carry some spare gas and run the truck till it stops and see how the computed miles to empty corresponds to the actual behavior of the truck (best to not do this on busy roads).

 

Yep. The display in the dash is not accurate. Mine says I'm getting 14.6 mpg -- and I've been right at 13 for the past few fill-ups (see signature banner)

Maybe I didn't explain we'll...the fuel gauge will be at a 1/4 tank one minute turn the car off and it won't move it will stay at empty... I know the gauges are a little off but most of the time there pretty close... I'm just wandering if there's a relay or something that runs the fuel gauge that might be getting stuck?

 

If there's plenty of fuel in the tank, but the gauge is reading empty, it's either a bad float in the tank (sending a wrong reading to the computer), or the gauge is sticking/broken. Neither are especially cheap things to check/fix, but given past history with other cars, I would bet on it being the float.

I don't think there's an access panel inside the truck to get to it, so the tank will have to be dropped. Consider replacing the pump at the same time (heck, it might all be one unit..)

Thanks...but it only happens when I get to about less then a quarter...after I fill up its fine?

 

Mine just start having similar problem. Three days ago I fill up the gas tank and it was full and this morning it showed empty. The needle did move up briefly and then go back down to empty.

 

I've had intermittent problems with my gas gauge for the past few years. A few days after fill up it would drop to half a tank which I knew was wrong since I only went about 20 miles. It would go back to showing normal after 1 - 2 weeks. Problem would occur 6 months later then go back to working correctly again. This has been going on for the past few years. I believe my problem is with the circuit board on the gauge cluster. I removed the cluster to try and see if I can find a bad solder near where the gas gauge is that I can hit with a soldering iron. I couldn't find any that looked like a broken solder connection. I did push on a lot of the soldering joints hoping by chance it would make a better connection and fix my current problem. It worked but I know it is not a true fix. Eventually I my need to send the gauge cluster to one of those companies that does this type of repairs. Its been a few months now since I did this and its still working so I'm just going to wait and see.

Please let us know if you get your problem fixed and if its a sensor or the float.

While not a direct same problem. Had express van than said 1/4 tank but ran empty ( not fun). Bad reads are probably a sign it's on the way out. Fuel pumps are not fun to replace but are doable by diy'ers. I suggest planning on not having use of vehicle for a few days ( helps). Also try refilling fuel at 1/4 full after fixed, at every refuel. The fuel actually lubricates pump and being submerged in fuel increases its longevity. My 2 cents
